Baby constipation help?

DD is 6 months, seems to struggle with her poos. She is breastfed and been on small amounts of solids (purées) for a month as recommended by our GP for allergy prevention. She has one or two massive poos daily but really seems to struggle. Straining, crying, waking from sleep. No blood in the poo and seems happy afterwards. She does suffer from CMPA and we avoid dairy and soya strictly again as directed by our GP.

I reckon her tummy’s just getting adjusted to solids but is there anything we can do to help her? She’s quite miserable until she gets the poo out. I don’t give anything constipating (I think) and she definitely hasn’t had any milk or soya (nor have I). Did your baby have this? Do they just grow out of it? My first never had this issue at all.

My baby is breastfed and when he started solids at 6 months it definitely effected his tummy. He seemed uncomfortable at times (especially at night) and was more 'gassy'. Strange as he hardly ate anything as we did/do BLW and most ended up on the floor! I didn't do anything and his digestive system just got used to it within a few weeks. He's 9 months old now and absolutely fine 😊

If she's still pooing daily I wouldn't worry, but you could give foods that will help - prunes and oranges are good.

Thank you, @Daisy20111 - sounds like my LO, hopefully just needs a bit of time to settle.

@SpamIAm do you give dried prunes? Do you purée them? Or mix with breast milk?

Massaging her tummy clockwise around her belly button and then cycling her legs up down might help. I went to a baby massage class when mine was little and when he was constipated this always got stuff moving.

My baby had chronic constipation from about 3 months, she’s now nearly 2 and I made the decision to give her goats milk (I had concerns it might be cows milk when she was 3 months doctor said no) as she got to 1 I gave her full fat cows milk, still constipated did not improve even with tons of movicol throughout the months, I recently changed her milk to goats full fat milk and thankfully she has gone to the toilet naturally every single day since without a tear or pain! I saw the same symptoms in my new born and put her on goat kendamil formula and again every single day she doesn’t have any trouble going to the toilet!
follow your gut, we always listen to medical professionals I just wish I listened to myself sooner it would have saved a lot of upset, hospital trips and heartache!
