How good is Hamilton (the musical)?

We live in a place that doesn't often get high-end entertainment. A decent production of Hamilton will be playing near us later this year and I need to make a decision.

I do love musicals, but I don't know much about Hamilton.

The reason I'm hesitating is because tickets are quite expensive. We can afford them (at the expense of something else), but I only want to afford them if it's amazing.

So...
A) Holy shit it's amazing you HAVE to see it
B) It's fun.

It is superb. Lin Manuel Miranda is a lyrical genius and it is musically, wonderful.

Whinge · 22/04/2023 20:05

It's brilliant, but there's also really good pro shot version on Disney+.

ClaraThePigeon · 22/04/2023 20:05

It depends. Most people seem to love it but I hated it and really disliked the music even though I usually love musicals.

Pinkflipflop85 · 22/04/2023 20:06

It's incredibly well written. The staging is amazing (if they keep it the same). I've been obsessed with it since long before it came to London so I of course I loved every second.

My friend had no background knowledge if it. Didn't understand the history and absolutely hated it!

Careerdilemma · 22/04/2023 20:07

A. Loved it all three times and would go again.

mynameiscalypso · 22/04/2023 20:07

A. I don't really like musicals and it was incredible. I've seen it 3 times now and listen to the soundtrack often still.

I think it partly depends on understanding the basics of the history and enjoying the music form it is presented in.
It is very clever both lyrically and musically.
It is also very high energy.

I would get familiar with the songs before I went to see it I think.

I would just add that to enjoy the production to its full potential do a small amount of pre show reading on what its about. Its very fast moving and you don’t want to miss a bit. I have seen it twice and when it comes to us next year I will see it again ( hopefully).

ClaraThePigeon · 22/04/2023 20:08

I'd watch at least some of it on Disney first to decide if it works for you. Or at least listen to the soundtrack. I really hated the music.

Fightingtalk · 22/04/2023 20:08

It’s amazing but I can’t imagine an amateur production because it’s very wordy and needs to be extremely slick. It’s quite unlike other musicals so might be worth listening to the sound track or watching it on Disney+ to see if it’s your cup of tea before shelling out on tickets?

CactiQueen · 22/04/2023 20:08

A without a shadow of a doubt.

viques · 22/04/2023 20:09

It’s ok, very lively. The issues I found were

i didn’t really understand the plot because I don’t know much US history

and the lyrics are very fast so you don’t really get to enjoy them.

i enjoyed it more watching it on Disney + with subtitles. Maybe do that first!

MuffinToSeeHere · 22/04/2023 20:09

A but you won't enjoy it at all of you go in cold. You need to listen to the soundtrack for the next few months on repeat and watch the Disney plus version beforehand.

WhereMyRosemaryGoes · 22/04/2023 20:10

Okay, so it sounds like we have to go, but do some homework first.

I was underwhelmed by it, but it had been seriously overhyped by the time I got to see it. I enjoyed the story (because I enjoy that period of history) but found it very Lin Manuel Miranda.

If you've seen Encanto you've seen all his shows.

I agree. I think the more you know about it, songs, story, history, characters etc the more enjoyable a live performance will be.

A . Worth the £200 per ticket I paid when it first came out

Then you'll recognise some of the music and enjoy Hamilton. His style is unchanging 😁
