Why can’t I just buy a comic…

Just wondering why every child’s comic now costs 4.99 and has a load of cheap plastic tat attached to the front.
I’d love to be able to buy just the comic.
Just that really.

You can get the Beano on subscription. It never has free gifts and is cheaper than the CBeebies kind of mags.

Buy The Phoenix story comic. Much less money, fantastic authors and illustrators.

Thank you for the suggestions. I’ll investigate.

As already mentioned...
Beano
The Phoenix
Plus there's various Comic Books suitable for older primary age kids - The Simpsons, Batman, Spiderman.
Also available is Commando (comic book war/action stories). They are all reprints but 4 available every month.
All of these are available in a decent branch of WHSmith.
As for the 'plastic tat' - the Lego magazines are decent (and have comic stories) but at least the plastic is good because it's Lego. Obviously if your child isn't into Lego.... not so good 😕

The Phoenix is great, and no plastic tat.

Dont mean to deviate but I really miss magazines. I absolutely loved getting a magazine when I was younger. Beano, Tammy, Jackie, Blue Jeans, Just 17, Marie Claire, Red, Elle, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, to name but a few. Never been interested in reading online versions.

Go to a comic book shop, they are usually around £3 and no tat. Stories also follow on. DS gets a batman/Scooby-Doo cross over (DH also reads comics....). If you talk to the people who work there they usually take your name and put your order aside and you go in each week/month/fortnight to collect and they'll be able to recommend something based on your DC's interests. Nice to support small business too.

Oh yes...as @UndercoverCop says if you go to an actual comic shop there is a gazillion to choose from. Unfortunately a lot of places don't have dedicated comic shops 😕

You'd be surprised how many there are. If they're too far, try eBay as a lot also have shops on there.
