stand up one leg from chair challenge

I can do both legs, but right leg stand up is harder than left leg stand up

Yes. Easier with the right than the left though.

I can also do the sit to stand longevity test.

BUT, I couldn’t actually do this at one time. I’ve started doing mobility exercises as I discovered that loss of mobility can be avoided in many people, and isn’t just a part of getting old, I don’t want to end up a doddery old lady!
I have osteoarthritis and strengthening the muscles around the joints helps to support them so I’m hoping to stay as mobile as possible for as long as possible.

Jazzabel · 22/04/2023 14:44

I can do it now after doing yoga for a few years but wouldn’t have been able to before

DrHousecuredme · 22/04/2023 14:45

With my other leg outstretched and my heel lightly on the floor (not weight bearing) then yes on either leg but the right is stronger.
With one leg completely off the floor then no, not a chance. I can't get my balance at all.

SwapTheYforaD · 22/04/2023 14:51

God no.

waterlego · 22/04/2023 14:53

Your link didn’t work for me OP so I Googled it. Not sure if what I’m looking at is the same challenge. The one I found was standing up with all the weight on one leg and the other leg extended forward, hands on hips so you can’t use them to push. I did it 15 times on each side without too much difficulty, but felt less balanced on left leg than right.

greenacrylicpaint · 22/04/2023 14:56

can't from sofa or dinjng room chair, but can from ergonomic office chair Confused

WeWereInParis · 22/04/2023 14:57

Yes, easily.

Kyse · 22/04/2023 14:57

Yes, but I only have a desk chair so used that
Harder on the right (nerve damage from cauda equina)

I try to exercise doing a mix of spin, barre, weights, yoga, stretching and specific mobility classes

Whichnumbers · 22/04/2023 15:20

CryWolf. thats really interesting, thanks

waterlego. one leg chair challenge is whats its called but it sound like you got the challenge through google

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/04/2023 15:42

Yes. Although I hold my arms out in front of me.
it's formed part of my physio exercises while recovering from a broken ankle.

ratherbepaddleboarding · 23/04/2023 13:04

Just tried it.

Kind of, but it wasn't easy.

Pretty sure it's because of the extra weight I'm carrying though. I'm 12.5 stone (5 ft 7) and need to lose around 2 stone Blush

What is it supposed to be testing?

JuneShitfield · 23/04/2023 13:10

The big test is whether you can stand balanced on one leg for at least 10 seconds. (It's ok if you wobble a bit.)

From the BMJ: The inability to stand on one leg for 10 seconds in mid to later life is linked to a near doubling in the risk of death from any cause within the next 10 years, finds research published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

TheOrigRights · 23/04/2023 13:15

Yes easily. I am a runner (strong legs) and do core exercises. I can also balance on one leg for a while.
I'm 52 and healthy.

NutButters · 23/04/2023 13:21

Easily.

This sort of thing (as well as balancing) improves really quickly with practice- it’s well worth doing to increase your chances of being mobile in old age.

AllYourReasons · 23/04/2023 13:23

Yes, easily.

I saw this on tiktok a while ago, it said if you can’t do it then you stand less chance of being able to walk in your 70s. That’s frightening.

waterlego · 23/04/2023 19:33

I can see how being able to do it once might give some idea of how good one’s balance and leg strength is, but the version I looked at said a good result was 25 reps on each side which would seem to be a better test of leg strength.

user1471453601 · 23/04/2023 19:39

Ah,youth, I remember that 😁. I cannot get up from my riser chair without using my arms, both of them.

make the most of it, because it does not last indefinitely, if you are "lucky" and survive to old age, you'll loose the ability, so use it, and keep using it as long as you possibly can. And enjoy it too, of course.

waterlego · 23/04/2023 19:39

I can easily balance on one leg for quite a lot longer than 10 seconds (I teach a class called Bodybalance so it would be a bit embarrassing if I couldn’t do that 😂)

The sit-rise test is a similar sort of test https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/wellness/this-anxiety-inducing-fitness-test-purports-to-tell-you-how-long-youll-live-we-investigated/2019/03/18/0a1d06fe-4035-11e9-9361-301ffb5bd5e6_story.html

I score 10 on this one but getting up is tricky!

waterlego · 23/04/2023 19:40

Very true @user1471453601!

emmathedilemma · 23/04/2023 19:56

Yes and I’ve had 2 glasses of wine right leg a lot easier than the left though (possibly explains why I run in circles)

I can sit down really easily, but getting up is hard. It hurts the outside of my feet to put all my pressure on them. I guess that means I'm relying on my feet raise my legs rather than my core.
Do I just need to practice?

waterlego · 23/04/2023 20:33

I have the exact same issue with it @TheOrigRights. Getting down is easy but getting back up really hurts the side of the feet and is difficult. I guess it could be a core issue. I’m going to keep practising!

Wittow · 23/04/2023 20:37

@waterlego I love bodybalance! That class would be great for all this sort of functional mobility stuff, wouldn't it?

Kyse · 23/04/2023 20:38

Not doing the one from the floor. I broke my ankle getting out of bed so... no Grin I can see me with 2 snapped ankles
