Learning to draw

My daughter has been looking for something we could do together regularly to set aside some time just for us and lit up when no suggested I learn to draw (she’s already becoming a decent artist so ot would be fun and useful for her too).

ideally we’d like something that takes you step by step over a course or something, where we have lots of smaller challenges and in a few months we can compare our progress .

Can you recommend a book or YouTube channel that might fit the bill. I’m a total beginner who can’t draw much that’s recognisable so my starting baseline is very low!

Hi there, I’m an illustrator and love drawing!

How old is your daughter? Is there anything in particular you would like to draw?

Circle line art school on YouTube is a great drawing resource, especially for learning things like perspective, shading techniques etc. It’s mainly pen/pencil.

There are some great drawing challenges on instagram that won’t teach you how to draw, but will get you in a good flow for sketching every day. If you search the hashtag DTIYS you’ll see loads come up, or just google ‘May drawing prompts’ for some inspiration.

Also, Domestika is a great resource of online courses that can help with drawing. They are about £10 a course but there’s loads of variety and different options and are really easy to follow. You can also specialise into different medias such as paints and pastels, or topics like buildings, people, cartoons etc.

Let me know if you would like some more ideas as some will depend on age and interests.

@CurtainsBeforeMorning this is great. My daughter is 11. She draws people and animals, some realistic and some cartoon. She just loves art in general but it’s mostly living things that she sketches.

mid love some more ideas. Very much pencil sketch drawing is the goal for now but we may branch out in future. She does water colour and oil paint already but I’m miles behind!

Sorry for the late reply.

I think my suggestions would work for an 11 year old. There is a paid for course with circle art school, it’s online based and is about drawing fundamentals but to be honest I think the online videos are free and just as good.

If she likes cartoons then there’s also a website called 21 Draw that she might be keen on. That does online videos etc.

Hope this helps, and you both enjoy getting creative!
