End of Child Benefit?

Hi, hope someone can advise as I can't seem to find out what to do. I have GC living with me, I claim child benefit and it will be ending this summer as he will be doing his A levels and leaving school.

Does it end when he starts study leave for his exams, or date of last exam, or end of term even though he won't actually be at school after his last exam although he will be doing an outdoor residential with the school in July. I can't afford to lose out on money I'm owed but on the other hand I don't want to claim it if I'm no longer eligible.

Help, all advice welcome.

Which is when he'd be eligible to claim UC in his own right if no job/uni lined up.

Government website page here:

Thanks, I had looked at that but it is what confused me, it gives the dates when it will end, including 31st May or 31st August but it doesn't explain which date so he finishes at school for study leave mid May but doesn't finish his exams till mid June and then does the school residential in July so I wasn't sure if it would stop on 31st May or 31st August.

From other posts it looks like it will be 31st August/1st September.

Thank you all for the help.

It will end on 31/8. The other dates given - end of feb, 31/5 and November are the dates when child benefit end if they leave/abandon the course before it finishes.

Thank you, gives me a bit more scope to find the money for a nice suit for his prom/job interviews.

We unenrol our Year 13 pupils from school in June (at the end of their exams), so before then, they're still in education and on roll with us.

As long as he is going back into education, you will need to provide the evidence of this what date the course starts and ends u can claim CB until he is 19 hope this helps also if you are still unsure you can always try calling citizens advice.

TeenDivided · 23/04/2023 09:47

Can they get CB if staying for a 3rd year in 6th form?

NoHaudinMaWheest · 23/04/2023 10:13

CB can continue if the child is in non advanced education (ie sixth form or Further Education college) until they finish their course provided they are still 19. It stops in all circumstances on their 20th birthday.

So for example ds did a 3rd year in 6th form due to illness and hospitalisation in his first year of 6th form. He completed his A level exams in the June when he was 19 and CB continued until 31st of August that year. As he has a September birthday he was almost 20 when CB ended.

Pottermom1 · 23/04/2023 10:23

All children staying in full time education no matter the course or amount of times re taking recieve cb untill 19 yrs as long as u have proof

Yes.

Thanks. I read the gov link and it wasn't very clear. Super. One more year. Smile

If I remember rightly if your child is in full time education and living at home you can claim until they turn 21
