Tracing someone

I want to trace my dad. I don't want contact and I don't want anything from him or for him to know I have tried to trace him.

He may well be dead. I haven't had contact for 40 years.

I am curious though to see whether he is alive etc.

What's the best way to do this?

Literally have his name and that's it.

I second the suggestion to do a google search. Keep going through as many pages as come up. Do you know his age? Companies House records and Ancestry.com are both searchable online and can be good if you roughly know his age (or even better, date of birth); they can help you narrow him down to an area in the country and other people in his life (which can help you build a broader picture of his life).

I could have written your post OP, same situation for me and a similar lack of info. I've scoured Facebook and also managed to find an entry for his marriage to my mum on the births, deaths and marriages register but no idea what to do next so following with interest.
