Interview with HR

Hoping that you can help me with some good questions for an interview with my HR team.

I'm applying for an internal role - sideways move with a new team but in a role I am more than capable of - I'm just looking for a change really.

I've got an interview with HR, having already had an informal chat with the current post holder as well as the manager of the team. This is the first formal step in the process.

Trouble is I can't think of questions to ask the HR manager! It's an internal role so I'm familiar with the company and have already asked informally about the role to the other two people I've spoken with.

Any ideas for good questions to bring up? Do I ask the questions I've already had answered by the manager and current post holder just to look interested, even though I already know the answers?!

Any great questions to ask at an interview that have informed you well and led to interesting convos? All ideas welcome (please!)

What are they hoping the new manager will bring to the team

What do they see the future scope of the team covering

What would the ideal candidate bring to the team

Point out you’ve done done research so you know about x & y

That's great, thanks. Also like the idea of letting them know I've done the research in advance, thanks for that!

Ask them if your were successful how would the transition from your current position to the new role work?

extramaturecheddarcheese · 18/04/2023 19:02

Ooh that's a good one too, thanks!

Make sure to tell them about skills you have that they may not be aware of. An internal applicant needs to change any preconceptions the hiring manager has of them!

I hate HR interviews. At my old work we switched from recruitment being done by the team to recruitment being handled by HR and oh my days they brought some dud people on board. I would just ask them the same questions you already asked tbh. Or, as someone else suggested, something that is actually what HR should be dealing with eg how does the transition work practically. Have a look on your intranet or recruitment page on the company website to see if you can see what buzzwords they want to hear/hoops they want you to jump through...

Sorry to anyone who is in HR! I do think HR are important for a company but they should not be heavily involved in interviewing candidates imo.

After 3 months/6 months/a year, what would success look like? ie what would they consider a successful hire after a settling in period? Gives you a view of future expectations to see if you are aligned.
