What’s this rash on my 1 year old?

Any ideas? He’s playful and normal self so I’m keeping an eye on him before jumping to call 111 for advice as with babies they always send to out of hours and I don’t want to waste their time if it’s just a viral/treat at home rash.

I’ve googled pictures and can’t see anything quite like it, the spots are red with white rings around and some of his skin looks more red.

his legs are mostly affected but it started on his face, and when I picked him up from nursery they said it had spread down his arms and legs.

Bless him. Cute chunky legs 😍 it looks like hand foot and mouth to me, but my son didn't get the white surrounding the rash. Did the nursery say anything? Is there a anything going around? I would still call a GP myself

Treacletoots · 17/04/2023 18:12

Assuming you've done the glass test OP, doesn't look like impetigo either.. I'd personally not waste time asking strangers on the Internet and get a doctor to check it out tonight, sorry.

Does he have a history of eczema at all?

My 1 year old recently had eczema herpeticum, which I had never heard of but it required a hospital admission for antivirals and antibiotics. The spots were not dissimilar to start with and were on arms, legs and face before her chest.

It's very painful for them so as it got worse she became more irritable and found it hard to sleep, her crying was what made me wonder if there was something strange going on.

Keep an eye on him and keep taking photos. If he is very unsettled and in pain take him to the GP tomorrow and they should recognise eczema herpeticum if it is that.

I think you'd be best calling 111. My DC have had many rashes over the years but non looked like that

Mazza7412 · 17/04/2023 18:32

Are the spots filled with anything, slightly watery? It doesn’t look like chicken pox but does look similar to HFM or Bullious impetigo. I work with little ones. I’d definitely be seeing a doctor. Did the rash come on suddenly?

Unfriendly · 17/04/2023 18:39

I first noticed it on his face when he woke up, but it looked almost like dribble rash, by the time we got to nursery I noticed a couple on his ear but still didn’t look as ‘big’ I thought it might be heat rash then.. but it’s since developed to this over the day and I think it’s getting worse so I’ll probably call 111 now.

His arms weren’t too bad when we got home but now they look like this ☹️

Looks like hand foot and mouth when my son had it at a similar age

Mazza7412 · 17/04/2023 18:55

If it started round his mouth I’d say probably HFM
did the nursery not call you to collect once they noticed it had spread?

GoneTillNovember · 17/04/2023 19:59

Worth getting it checked.

This was my little one's leg with eczema herpeticum. It got gradually worse and spread and 48 hours later she was in hospital.

GoneTillNovember · 17/04/2023 20:00

Actually maybe that was the night before she went in. It also started on her face and I thought it might be hand foot and mouth.

Besthaveanamechange · 17/04/2023 20:05

Bless him. Looks like scarlet fever but also could be ‘just’ a viral rash. Agree 111.

Rubyupbeat · 17/04/2023 21:51

Gosh, I would get it seen too. It looks very angry.

Unfriendly · 18/04/2023 09:53

Morning! Just to update I didn’t ring 111, he was happy and playful and with a bit more umming and ahhing I’m pretty sure it’s from his vaccinations a couple weeks ago. NHS online says they can come up in a small rash a couple weeks after having the vaccination for MMR, and this morning the rash has changed form bigger spots and patches to a fine, very measles looking rash! His face and ears are covered and his arms and legs are quite red today. I’m continuing to keep an eye on it and will also send some photos to the GP today just so they can have a look.

Mutabiliss · 18/04/2023 10:01

I would definitely, definitely get that checked by the GP. Hopefully it is just the MMR reaction, but that looks like quite a nasty rash and it sounds like it's getting worse.

Unfriendly · 18/04/2023 15:43

We’re booked in to go see the GP this evening he’s still find in himself but the rash is not going and looks like horrible sunburn now, he’s bright red and I think his hands might look a little bit swollen. I’m hoping the GP can give us some answers!

Pharmacist would probably be able to tell you. I think a rash that bad needs professional advice

hadenoughofhisshit · 18/04/2023 19:36

We've all this in the last 2 weeks. Lasts 48 hrs - no other symptoms or illness. It's very odd.

familyissues12345 · 18/04/2023 19:54

Oh those thighs 😍

Hope he's alright OP, bless him

Unfriendly · 18/04/2023 21:05

Go downer know either, said it’s a ‘non specific’ rash, doesn’t think it’s viral but said to keep an eye on him. He looks a fair bit better this afternoon evening and the GP agrees his hands look swollen so to go back if it gets any worse.

GP doesn’t know*

OP posts:
Unfriendly · 18/04/2023 21:09

It progressed to this, then it turned into less of an obvious result and more of a complete skin covered red rash, like really bad sun burn. I’m pretty baffled but I’m still leaning towards a bad reaction to his vaccination eve though it’s a couple weeks later.

A nasty rash is still better than the actual disease and a baby coffin though👍🏼

My daughter has the exact same!! It's covering her whole body and seems to be getting worse, picture doesn't do justice to how angry it looks. One dr said allergic reaction and another said viral and prescribed dermol and piriteze. She's said it feels sore and also very swollen, she's had it since Saturday. If she's the same tmo I'm taking her to tye hospital I think!

I think it looks like the allergic reaction my DC had recently (to Penicillin). Her hands, feet, ankles and legs were very swollen too.
