Hob help! Panicking!

LoveSick64 · 17/04/2023 16:58

I cleaned my hob and now the cooker hobs won’t turn on, it makes a clicking sound but there is no spark and no flame .

I’m panicking because I have guests coming over on Friday…any advice greatly appreciated. I cleaned the inner hob bits last week so any moisture surely should have gone by now, also have used the oven several times to “dry” the cooker.

Same happened to me

turn off at mains
thoroughly dry
leave off for a couple of hours
turn back on

Take the elements off, get some kitchen roll and have a thorough dry inside. It’ll just be residual water.

Sometimes it's because the little round bits that sit on the top (they probably have a name but I don't know it) have been put back incorrectly and the gas flow is impeded. There is usually a little notch to indicate how they sit but it is easy to put them back to front and they look "normal".

Or, as suggested above, check that the inside bits are completely dry.

Try lighting the gas with a match and then leave them burning for a bit. That used to work on my old gas cooker.

My mum's won't work if the black circles that sit on top aren't in exactly right.

ApolloandDaphne · 17/04/2023 17:26

I have to jiggle the little black bits so they sit properly before I can get the rings to ignite.

Lovestodrinkmilk · 17/04/2023 17:31

Yòu can buy portable table top electric hobs from places like Argos, if you can't revive it.

Mine is like this. They have to be in the absolute correct position or the gas flow is blocked.

Definitely do that, otherwise it leaves a deposit, which can block the gas jets (bitter experience). And no harm in lighting them without the igniter, to check they work / help dry them.

The little stubby things, which generate the sparks (next to the elements) often need a gentle clean, as they get food / grease on them and that can stop a spark forming.

The black ring thingies are called elements, if you ever need to replace them.

Use a gas lighter

SinnerBoy · 17/04/2023 17:48

Yes, you can get long reach refillable ones for 2 Quid from B&M, Wilko etc.

DRS1970 · 17/04/2023 18:02

Dry out the igniters with a hairdryer, and try again

Can't you light the hobs with a lighter in the meanntime.
I had this same problem but that was when a lot of water had spilt on the hob.

LoveSick64 · 17/04/2023 19:42

I bloody love mumsnet!

Thank you all, will try all the tips. I bought the gas lighter thing but there is no gas coming out to light the hob....some of them are working. Will give the igniters a clean and a blow dry!

You turn the knob and light it with the lighter when its making the clicky sound.
