Any insurance experts out there?

Debating whether or not to claim for DS’s broken mobile phone.
Smashed beyond repair.

The same type of phone is no longer available new, so the insurance would have to pay for the next model up, which would cost about £400. My excess is £100 so the insurers would pay about £300.

My current annual premium for house insurance is £100. Insurers have told me that a claim would raise my premium for next year, but couldn’t tell me by how much. I don’t have protected no claims or anything like that.

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of this. I’m trying to decide if it’s worth getting £300. Obviously it won’t be worth it if it doubles my premium for the next few years!

DS is currently using his brother’s old phone so he’s not without a phone.

thanks

Why don't you just buy him a cheaper, refurbished phone as a replacement? That's what I would do.

He may as well continue with his brother’s old one, which is essentially the same as buying a second hand one.
I just wasn’t sure if claiming would be the best thing financially or not. It’s frustrating - we pay these premiums and end up not using the cover because of the risk of premiums rising. And I’m annoyed that the insurance couldn’t even tell me what the rise in premium would be. And once I start the process, it’s logged as a claim even if I withdraw and they pay me nothing!
