Would you say something?

My MIL sends a big box of chocolates for every occasion- my birthday, Christmas- even Easter. I'm currently looking at two such boxes as my birthday fell the week before Easter this year.

The problem is that the chocolates are disgusting (they are from the same company every time). I can normally eat any chocolate- whether cheap or expensive. But these are very greasy and just not nice at all - a bit like American chocolate (but worse).

I give the boxes to the school tombola usually.

But would you try and say something? I'd love a box of chocs. No one else buys me them!

No. This is your life now. Never say anything.

Lulu1919 · 16/04/2023 20:32

You could say in convo how much you lobe chocolate but you've decided to only eat ' select a brand you like ' as it's ....and come up with a reason..healthier,better for environment, fair trade ...whatever you like ?!?

No. Don't be rude.

You could try telling her you enjoy them but her generosity means you are now over familiar with them and she is welcome to surprise you with a different brand

PussBilledDuckyPlait · 16/04/2023 20:47

You could try enthusing about your preferred brand in her presence.

Grin My mum put a chocolate orange in my stocking every single year I hate chocolate orange Never said a word
TwittyPittyWitty · 16/04/2023 21:09

I'd love a chocolate orange!

MIL is lovely but there'll be a reason why she chooses this brand (I'd never heard of it). She must have shares or something. So dropping hints won't make a dent.

But I definitely don't want to be rude. It just feels a waste.

Thorntons?? I can’t stand them!!

Needmorelego · 16/04/2023 21:12

Get your husband to casually say "I don't think she likes those chocolates you buy Mum, she never eats them - I always end up finishing them off" and then do a little laugh.
That way he hasn't actually said you don't like them but maybe she'll get the hint ?

LovelyDayz · 16/04/2023 21:35

You say "ooh mil, I think they must have changed some of the ingredients in the chocolates you bought me, they weren't nearly as nice as they used to be, I couldn't eat them this time! Might be time to give another brand a try. I've heard lindor are really nice".

TwittyPittyWitty · 16/04/2023 21:40

Not Thorntons. I'm not sure I should say the name?!

We are not on a BBC TV show, you can say the name of the company

Every year MIL has bought DH a pack of ruffles. He doesn’t like ruffles and he never has. Neither do I, or the kids.
25 Years this has gone on for. Finally, on Christmas Day the opportunity came up to say he didn’t like them anymore as they didn’t taste like they used to 😂

Im absolutely expecting him to get them this year anyway.

TwittyPittyWitty · 17/04/2023 10:58

@Phantomime This has only gone on for about 6 years. I used to get flowers before that. No idea why the switch was made. So I might have another 19 years to go before we can casually create a change...

Are you the same person who quoted the ancient Chinese proverb: when man prunes his garden, expect visitors?
That was a cracking one.

Magnoliainbloom · 17/04/2023 11:48

But white aren’t wasted as they go to a tombola. Why not treat yourself to chocolates you want?

AuntieMarys · 17/04/2023 12:05

Maybe she's regifting 😀
I'd tell her.

Why not just drop into conversation that you're on a diet and you've given up chocolate?

Just make sure you don't eat it in her presence.

IfICouldIStillWouldNot · 17/04/2023 21:08

You have an allergy to the chocolates, what a shame.

Alargeoneplease89 · 17/04/2023 21:11

Can't you just say you are going vegan, dieting, lactose intolerant etc?
