York for the day on my own. Where are the nice places to eat & shop?

Fancy doing a day trip on my own to York, via the train. Is it a nice place to go for the day?
Is the shopping good in York?
Can you recommend any nice independent cafes for coffee & lunch, please?
Any must sees whilst I'm there?
Thanks 😁

Oh, that sounds lovely 🙂, York is really nice.

City Screen Picturehouse has a café with a nice vibe.
Betty's has a lovely shop and café.
There are nice walks along the river, or around the city walls.
You can do a boat tour along the river.
York Minster is beautiful to visit, and you can pay to go inside.
There are lots of nice shops as well.

OK, can I come 😄.

The chocolate experience is worth doing.
The Shambles is nice to walk down, although most of the shops are typical tourist stuff.
If its a nice day you could walk the walls or go on an open top bus tour.

The Treasurer's House is NT and interesting.
Swinegate has a good choice of places to eat. Lucia is an Italian we like

I could spend a whole day in the beautiful christmas shop myself.

House of Trembling Madness. The one over the shop. Great beer and breakfast.

Oh thanks everyone! Yes @Dingus , you can come 😆
You've convinced me to book it. With going on my own, I didn't want to go and there not be much to see/do!
Are there any nice bookshops in York?

There used to be an independent bookshop with a lovely cafe just inside the wall on Micklegate. I haven't been for a while though.

Apologies - it's closed. Will try and think of another

Quite a few nice bookshops yes.

If you like antiquarian books, there's also an antiquarian book fair held in January and September each year.

I liked The Imaginarium, which was a plant and soap shop. Weird combo but nice stuff. There’s a food market in the Shambles area which is great (just behind The Shop which cannot be named) and I’d recommend that for a nice place if it’s warm ish and dry. Betty’s is fun too - though much more traditional.

The York castle museum is a great place to visit. Right next to Clifford’s Tower which, as a pp mentioned, has just reopened.

You have to go to Betty's if you like cafes. It's a York institution! It's a lovely place for a day trip. Museum Gardens (and the museums there) are lovely. York Minster. Nice shops to look round too.

Nice cafe in the NT property or at least there was pre covid

Whatliesbeneath707 · 16/04/2023 21:08

Thank you for all the great suggestions! I am going to note all of these down.
I'm so glad I asked you all, as I had almost talked myself out of going on my own.
Thank you for the book shop link too - perfect.
