Neighbour screaming for help (I’m scared)

Scaredofthescreams · 16/04/2023 05:46

I’m in canada for context.

We live in an apartment. We were doing our nightly routine at roughly 10pm getting into PJs, brushing teeth and playing soft music to relax our little one when we heard ridiculously loud bangs. Sometimes the people in the hallways (especially the teenagers) can be a bit inconsiderate on the weekends so we thought nothing of it.

But this was much louder than usual. It sounded like a large grown man jumping up and down on the floor above us as hard as he could. We tried to ignore it but it went on for nearly 20 minutes. It was so loud it was echoing into the hallways and through the elevator shaft.

I finally said loudly “What they actual fuck is going on up there?! What the hell are they doing? Herding elephants?!!” I think they heard me through the floor because they stopped suddenly. It finally got quiet for about ten minutes. We thought it was over and then suddenly a woman’s voice rang through the halls.

“HEEEEEEEELLLLPPP MEEEEEE!!!!”
”HEEEEEEELLLLPPP MEEEE.”

M blood ran cold. The screams could be felt in my bones. Husband passed me daughter. He ran out into the hallways looking for the source trying to figure out which door it came from. Several neighbours are now nervously checking outside trying to figure out what is happening.

I made an anonymous call to the police while he checked. (We never did find out which apartment) My once loud and cheery daughter is clinging to me quiet as a mouse.

Dead and very ominous silence for an hour. Then some loud bumps again calm man’s voice arguing with…. someone…? Police radios and finally nothing. We decided to try and go to sleep. But I’m not sleeping. Those screams are haunting me. The terrifying realization that that banging might have been a person being brutally beaten.

It’s a hot night. We normally sleep with the windows cracked when it’s warm but now we are all sleeping in the same bed overheating with the windows firmly locked because we are terrified that some violent person could try to sneak in and do the same to us.

I know I am probably being dramatic but that was horror movie level stuff. I hope the attacker was caught I hope the police found the right apartment. I hope… I hope everything is okay. I never thought silence could be scary. I hope that woman is okay and not dead. It’s nearly 2am and I’m still shaking.

Did none of you/ your neighbours go out to speak to the police? That sounds horrific. I can't imagine any of you will get much sleep until you know the woman is ok.

elodiesmith · 16/04/2023 05:53

That's awful and I would feel the same, it's totally normal that you're so scared - I mean we don't even know if he's murdered her. And it's right on your doorstep.
Is you husband sleeping? I'd put a quiet tv on and make camomile tea. I don't think I'd be able to sleep at all.

elodiesmith · 16/04/2023 05:54

If police haven't closed off the area with tape then I think it's safe to say she hasn't been killed.
Hopefully that will give you some comfort x

I didn’t think to. I don’t know. After husband came back we stayed huddled up in the living room. I stayed on the line with 911 for a bit and husband relayed that he couldn’t find which apartment it came from. I know it was on the 2nd floor either directly above or adjacent to our apartment for certain. I hope that helped them narrow things down. They said they would call back if they find more information. They never called back. 😭 Maybe they have bigger problems than us? We probably were not the only call about that same situation that night. Maybe they just got busy and forgot us?

As I’m typing this I see police vehicle lights driving passed our windows. I’m guessing it’s not over…

Thanks. I don’t see any tape outside so that does help a little.

Is there a non urgent police number you can call to ask for an update?

WTF475878237NC · 16/04/2023 06:11

I didn't mean to imply you should have, was just clarifying what happened. Your husband and neighbours did the right thing in going to try and find the source to save the woman. Hopefully that frightened the attacker into running off and the police are driving around searching for him!

Skulldrudgery · 16/04/2023 06:19

I did it once (call police due to DV incident next door). I can remember how shaken I felt. I asked to remain anonymous as the reporter but the police went out to their van, called me and asked if they could come in and take a statement because the woman was visibly injured . So it became obvious I reported it as the Police came in and out of my house.
You’ve done the right thing. It is very unsettling for you though. I hope your neighbour is ok and gets the support she needs x

Seabreeze18 · 16/04/2023 06:21

Very scary! Hope u find out more info today?

Scaredofthescreams · 16/04/2023 06:24

@CatMattress Your comment gave me the idea to try but the hold AI says it will be at least an hour wait and it’s very late. 😭

@WTF475878237NC I know you didn’t mean that. And thank you. I do hope we did some good. I haven’t seen an ambulance yet. No idea if that’s a positive or a negative.

Spooky, for sure. I hope the Police do more welfare checks in the morning.

Nicecow · 16/04/2023 06:40

Wtf have I just read. And you did nothing? I hope the person is ok. I would hope if I was screaming for help someone would care enough to do something 😪

Nicecow · 16/04/2023 06:41

Sorry it's late and I missed a paragraph in your post! I'm glad you called, I hope they are ok. Sounds horrible

proppy · 16/04/2023 06:44

I don't understand, did noons talk to the police, did they not talk to anyone?

Did you not read the OP?

theheights · 16/04/2023 06:49

Why do people not read OPs properly before jumping to conclusions? 🙄

I hope you soon get some answers OP and that no one has actually been hurt.

Brenna24 · 16/04/2023 06:58

In the absence of an ambulance and police taping an apartment off i think that you managed to get the police there in time. With all the police around I doubt that it is unsafe to open your windows now. I hope that you get some sleep and that your daughter forgets it soon enough.

andhmk · 16/04/2023 07:03

How odd

Ithurtsthebackofmyeyes · 16/04/2023 07:05

You’re probably safe to open the windows.

Pinkflamingopants · 16/04/2023 07:08

@Nicecow what?! Did you read ANY of the post?

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 16/04/2023 07:22

That sounds distressing, it is good you heard her and called the police.

Dontthinkthrice · 16/04/2023 07:23

This is so distressing . Hope everyone is ok 😢

??? Her husband ran out to find out which appartment it was whilst she rang the police, they did everything they could. Ringing the police is the best possible thing to do in these circumstances.

OP I used to live next door to a man who regularly beat his GF, it is absolutely horrible, I sympathise. As pp said if there's not a crime scene and multiple police cars then she's alive so there's that 😬

BuddyandTinsel · 16/04/2023 07:28

You did the right thing. Your post stylr is very dramatic but you weren't being dramatic in calling the Police.

Did you actually read it? They called the Police. The Police were there.
