The golden child and the scapegoat

Everything about this movie is amazing, but it reflects family dynamics you often see on Mumsnet all the time.

Human nature, not just Mumsnet. Fairy tales, Greek mythology etc are full of these dynamics.

SunnyLion · 15/04/2023 20:40

Peronally I think this is one of Disneys worst films.

Peronally I think this is one of Disneys worst films.

The songs are good but the storyline is weak.

Coco is far better and underrated.

Me too, Coco is much better and hardly ever gets a mention. The music in Encanto is lovely, it has some catch songs and it's visually very pretty but the storyline isn't great and the whole thing felt rushed.

SunnyLion · 15/04/2023 21:09

You know when you watch something and after 10 mins you're looking for something else to do. That's how i feel about this film. I find it boring and uninteresting.
Agree that coco is a lovely story and an easy watch.

Bobbybobbins · 15/04/2023 21:20

I also find it boring. Much prefer Moana.

BlueThursday · 15/04/2023 21:21

The soundtrack definitely carries it

HeyJudeNanananana · 15/04/2023 21:22

Lin Manuel Miranda is a musical genius

Lin Manuel Miranda is a musical genius

That may be true but I agree that I thought this was a very average film.
Some lovely characters and songs but the story was weak.
Fairly forgettable I thought. There are many Disneys I love more.

Lin Manuel Miranda is a musical genius

He really isn't

ThreeRingCircus · 15/04/2023 21:28

Totally agree that Lin Manuel Miranda's music (and the animation) is what carries Encanto....the story is actually pretty rubbish.

Also agree that Coco is underrated, it's a BEAUTIFUL film and still makes me cry.

HeyJudeNanananana · 15/04/2023 21:30

@Mustardandchickensandwiches different opinions is what makes the world interesting Smile

Kitcaterpillar · 15/04/2023 21:34

It's so lovely to look at and the songs are great. I try and not overthink children's entertainment but if I dwell even briefly on the Bruno situation...quite depressing?

Figgygal · 15/04/2023 21:37

Once and done for me I was bored
The kids have never rewatched it either yet
Few good songs though

The depiction of the root of the intergenerational trauma is pretty brutal for Disney - and certainly not part of the standard MN fare.

Is it unusually brutal for Disney? Maybe compared to Frozen but not so much for the older Disney films

Lion King- Simba watches his uncle murder his father in front of him and then spends time whimpering at his father’s body

Bambi- mum gets shot

Dumbo- mother and baby get tragically separated by the circus and then she cradles him through the bars of her cage

Hunchback of notre dame- religious figure, intent on the genocide of the Romany people, “accidentally” kills a woman by dashing her brains on stone steps, considers drowning a baby and then instead decides to raise it as an emotionally abusive parent and teach it to hate itself for being disabled. Later burns down the entirety of Paris in search of a woman he both racially hates and sexually desires and ultimately plunges to his death in a sea of molten metal in what is a clear allusion to him going to hell (now that one is intense!)

Aboutcoffee · 15/04/2023 22:28

Terrible film. Sat through it twice with my daughter cos she liked it but even the second time she was saying that is the meanest grandmother ever. Poor Mirabelle. I think it’s different from the other movies because they were a clearer good v evil. But with Encanto there is this supposed lovely old grandma who is not lovely at all.

LysHastighed · 15/04/2023 22:30

I was also very disappointed by it, and thought Coco was wonderful.

SoupedUpSue · 15/04/2023 22:52

I’m so surprised by these comments - it’s absolutely one of my favourite Disney films, on par with the golden age of the 1990s. Moana I found much more boring (although visually stunning). Love everything about Encanto.

Duckingella · 15/04/2023 22:52

Did no one see Mirabelle posting on the stately homes thread?

Lapland123 · 15/04/2023 22:56

The family dynamics make me want to run far away!
Over rated irritating film and I don’t think much of the music either.

Millicentmargaretamandaholden · 15/04/2023 23:00

I loved it! Really loved it.
