Manchester Metrolink Tram ticket help please

I'm due to travel to Manchester in the evening, and need to get from Victoria to Deansgate today, then tomorrow from Deanagate to Old Trafford.

What is the best way to buy a ticket please? Is it the Adult Weekend one that covers zone 1 to 4?

There seems to be more than one app to buy this from- Get me there and the other is Metrolink. Is one better than the other?

Now, having grown up in London, I don't have a problem with navigating the lines, but I naively thought I could just hop on a tram and tap my phone instead of buying a ticket in advance. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thanks in advance.

You can just buy a ticket at the tram stop. There are machines at all of them.

You can, you just swipe your phone (or card) on the machine when you get on, and the same when you get off. It automatically calculates how much you owe and it capped at a certain amount per day.

This. It's the best way just make sure remember to tap

There are contactless machines at each station - tap in and out (with your card) and they will work it out for you!

Victoria and deansgate are zone 1, old Trafford may be zone 2? If you're staying in those areas, definitely don't need zones 1-4

Thanks everyone.

That's what I meant @user1471447924 . Just tap using Google wallet and that's it?

Do I need to download the app or get the Metrolink equivalent of an Oyster card at all then?

No you don’t, so long as your bank card is linked to Apple Pay or similar it will work automatically. It’s exactly the same as the tube, very straightforward. 👍🏻

That's good to know. Thank you.

Just to add, there is a free bus that will take you between stations in the city centre so you may not need a tram ticket for Victoria-Deansgate

Even better. Thank you @worktired.

Victoria station isn’t far from Deansgate if you want to walk

SomethingFun · 15/04/2023 11:29

It’s about a 15-20 min walk down a straight road from Victoria to Deansgate if that is something that appeals. Your train ticket used to include city centre tram between the train stations as well - might be worth checking if this is still the case. The tap in/out machines are waist high and yellow - it’s easy to forget to tap out because you don’t have barriers like the tube. Hope you have a lovely time in Manchester.
