Tipping WWYD?

I've just had an excellent meal, on my own.Service was attentive but not intrusive, food excellent.

I asked for the bill and put my card out to indicate I was ready to pay. Waiter came and just tapped my card without giving me the opportunity to add a tip. I don't have any cash.

I'd have given a generous tip. Do I just leave it?

Are you still there? I'd personally tip before you go. Great service is not a given anymore, unfortunately, and if they made you welcome and comfortable (specially being alone), then that should be recognised. Even more so if it's a place you'd like to frequent again.

Glad you had a lovely meal and time

Skinnermarink · 14/04/2023 20:31

Was service definitely not included? If no opportunity to tip I’d assume it was.

PricklyFoot · 14/04/2023 20:34

Definitely not included. I'm on holiday so won't be back, leave tomorrow.

How do I go about leaving a tip without any cash?

Where are you? A lot of this tip etiquette very much depends on tbf county.

You just pay for your tip with your card, just like you would have whilst paying your bill. Just ask your waiter or is there front of house staff? A maitre'd? Not sure how nice/posh a place it is. Or as a last resort, leave restaurant, go find cashpoint, then poo back in with cash tip

Okunevo · 14/04/2023 20:56

Sounds like there isn't a tipping culture where you are. You have already paid for service, it's included in the menu price. If you missed your opportunity to say something before paying and have no cash then I wouldn't worry but would leave a good review instead. That will be much appreciated.

It is a bit concerning that you were not shown the amount on the screen before tapping your own card. I actually wouldn't be happy about that.

YolayCaprese · 14/04/2023 20:57

A lot of places are adding 10% now regardless, what does your receipt say?

Skinnermarink · 14/04/2023 20:58

Leave them a lovely review.

Sashamans4 · 14/04/2023 20:59

In restaurants if you leave the tip on your card the employees don’t always Actually get the tip themselves , I work for a big chain and we don’t receive any tips that go through the till in the card machine unfortunately.

quietlycontent · 14/04/2023 21:03

They don't want a cc tip as they have to pay NI on it or in rubbish restaurants the mgt keep them so they skip that bit from the credit card machine to encourage you to leave a cash tip

Then they get the money straight away, its obviously worth them losing some credit card tips to gain cash when they can.

Dontbelieveaword · 14/04/2023 21:05

Pps have good points. I agree a good review is just as valuable as a tip so if you can't sort the tip, I wouldn't worry too much if you can take the time to write a review.

And about waiting staff not receiving tips, I always make a point of asking before adding it onto a card payment. If they say no, they don't receive the tips, I always make sure I have cash to give them instead

I have not seen the "add gratuity?" option on card readers for years when eating out. I am glad this has gone because it always felt awkward for both parties.

If you are somebody that might be inclined to tip then take some cash next time you go for a meal.
