Money taken from my account - didn't sign up to subscription?

Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else as I'm absolutely baffled to why/how it's happened. I've changed some details as it's potentially outing.

I usually pay for some fitness classes at my gym. The person who runs the classes usually sends me an invoice when the next set of classes are about to begin. I simply open my email and pay using my card. This morning, I went to check my bank balance via online banking, and I could see a good chuck of money had disappeared. I couldn't see what the transaction was, so called my bank and they told me the transaction was 'pending'. They told me what the authorisation code was, and I immediately knew it was the amount of money for the new set of classes.

I hadn't told the teacher that I wouldn't be continuing as I thought we had a few more classes left. She did incorrectly bill me last time but that issue was cleared up. What confuses me further though is that I did not authorise any type of subscription, I only paid the invoice. I have gone back through my emails and nothing suggests that I've signed up to a subscription based service. I was even a couple of days late paying the last invoice and nothing came out of my account then.

Has anyone had similar happen to them?! Not sure where to go from here. Bank says I can get money back but she'll have to stop the transaction, or it will be flagged as fraudulent and then i'll have get a new card.

Feeling very awkward about it all...
