Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey

It was in the news today that Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey might be half brothers (same father).

What are the odds that two Hollywood megastars would be fathered in two separate non-showbiz families. I was going to say 'normal' families but Woody's father's criminal career was pretty far from normal.

Matthew does look like Woody's father, from the photos I saw today.

Yes. McConaughey's mother was between divorces, and has said that she 'knew' Woody's father at that time.

Pretty crappy of MM’s mother to make a flippant comment like that. As he says, it’s not as simple as taking a DNA test - what if his father is not in fact his father?

The two actors don’t look the same at all, except the blonde hair and tanned skin.
Both of them are the surfer dude (as in looks) type but this is where the similarities end. I also consider Owen Wilson that surfer dude type so based on that he could also be their brother. But otherwise there’s no facial similarities. I doubt they are related to each other.

I remember reading an interview with MM where he said his father died inside his mother. So it sounds like she enjoys a mic drop moment.

I saw this piece yesterday. It was a bit jaw dropping for me.

This is because, for decades, I have always got these two actors mixed up. They seem SO alike. And now there is a chance they are brothers. Makes sense to me.

Re his dads death:

Neither can I, and I suffer from mild face blindness.

I have trouble telling people apart both on screen and in real life but have never noticed any resemblance between these two.

I do think they look alike around their mouths and cheekbones. I didn't know MM's mother had previous form for saying outrageous things.

Interesting to see if MM does have a DNA test - I can see why he wouldn't, but equally it does make it seem more likely they have said this as PR for their new show if he doesn't. Would have thought they were famous enough to not dredge around for PR though.

I think they look fairly alike, not when they were young but more recently. There was that series, True Detective, that they were both in and they looked similar. Plus when I saw the first Hunger Games film I thought that it was McConaughey and only realised it was Harrelson nearly half way through. It's especially noticeable in the face shape when they are both a bit underweight, the bone structure is very similar.

McConaughey's mother has a history of outrageous behavior. They did not speak for a time when he found out she was selling stories to the tabloids about him.

And she had a very tempestuous relationship with her husband, I believe MM is on record taking about physical violence, etc. IIRC, she cut off part of her husband's finger during an argument😱

So I think this is 100% all publicity (though it makes for an interesting story)!

Mind you, looking alike doesn't mean anything. I can barely tell Keira Knightly and Natalie Portman apart, except that one is an excellent actor, but there is no chance that they are related. On the other hand my brother and I are full siblings and he looks very like our Mum's side of the family while I take after my Dad's side, and DB and I therefore look nothing alike. We don't even sound alike as I lived abroad for ages.

MM and his mother are HUGE attention seekers. WH is a very strange man who had a crazy upbringing. Put them together and what do you get? This story. As PP said a simple DNA test would answer the question but that is not what they have done.

Woody used to live near my cousin and the stories were 10/10 entertaining, would def like to hear more 😂

Their new series where their families live together on a ranch and they ‘fictionalise themselves’ 🙄is literally called ‘Brother from Another Mother’. So, coincidentally, Mom makes her revelation now - and of course they can’t take a DNA test: all that cheap pre-show publicity speculation would be lost!
