Not too expensive knife set recommendations?

Have had my current set for nearly 10 years which were a house warming gift. They're falling apart and never seem sharp despite me sharpening them.
Any recommendations for a decent knife set that won't break the bank? I never know if any old ones will do or if it's worth spending a bit more...?

Victorinox, don't buy a set, just the style you use the most.

Ok interesting thank you. I wondered if just chucking them in the drawer with all the timber utensils and bits would blunt them etc if you don't have a knife block..?

I've bought some really good sharp ones from Lidl.

Not sure what your budget is, but we have a set from Wusthof that are at least 25 years old and still doing fine. They take an edge easily and stay sharp for a very long time. Really good quality construction too.

Just throwing in the drawer will blunt them. I have a block in my drawer like this for my knives. Some people like magnetic strips on their walls.

I'll second the Victorinox suggestion, and also the advice to just buy the knives you need. 95% of my knife use is with my chef's knife. Having a block with five knives would be a total waste of money for me.

Global knives- but don't buy a set- only the ones you actually use day to day

Don't get pro-cook. They are dreadful. Blunt the first time we used them and no matter how many times we sharpen them we can't get them sharp enough.

We have Zwilling knifes. They are a bit pricey but we just buy one every now and again. We nearly have the full set now.
Use a knife block, keep them sharpened, don't ever put the in the dishwasher, hand wash and dry them immediately.
