How to live in two countries part of the year

My dad is English living in New Zealand, with residency. He's nearing retirement age and would love to come here more often for extended stays / more regularly go between the UK and NZ.

I would love to hear from anyone who has made this type of arrangement work. How did you do it?

Living costs feels like the biggest barrier. I don't think he could afford to purchase property in the two countries at the same time ie keep his house in NZ and also buy here, or to have properties empty. We don't have space to put him up for extended periods.

From people I have met you usually need to be pretty well off and either live with relations or buy somewhere

Relations of mine who do it are pretty wealthy. They have a big house in Aus, and a flat here.
They rent out properties here to fund their lifestyle.

That's what I feared really.
