15 year old entering into a phone contract?

This cannot be right, surely?

After DD's dad passed away we tried to get her phone transferred to me but were told because of the type of contract he had we would have to take it all on (TV, BB, landline etc). We didn't need that so we cancelled it.

I got DD a sim card and we waited for her phone to disconnect. And waited. And waited.

Eventually, she got a text message asking her to click the link to pay her overdue bill, so we did and we've just paid the bill that way since as DD did not want to lose her phone number or have to wait to port it over.

Fast forward to today, she gets her monthly text message and clicks the link which usually transfers her to an automated service where she just says my debit card number and the amount she wants to pay. This time she was put through to a real person who transferred her to the bereavement team.

They closed the account in DH's name and took down DD's details to open a new one with the same phone number. She gave her name, address, DOB correctly and gave her occupation as "student". At no point did anyone ask to speak to me. I only found out about it after the fact when she asked me for DH's death certificate and told me why she needed it.

According to the email she showed me her new contract will be posted to her once she emails a copy of the death certificate. The email included her details to confirm they were correct and she did give her actual DOB.

I've told her we need to phone them and explain she is 15 and move it to my name but she is adamant it is done and she just needs to email a copy of the death certificate.

This can't be right?

That's not right.

It doesn't sound right. I though a person had to be eighteen to enter a phone contract in their own name as it's considered a credit account?
I may be wrong though, I expect someone will come along who knows.

I'm sure it's 16 to be able to have their phone contract without a legal guardian x

Ah,

She's 16 in a few weeks. I wonder if that's why. They never asked to speak to me for permission, though.

Just checked its 18 x

I was 99% certain it was 18 but I wasn't sure if there was a special circumstances clause that would allow her to take over an existing contract.

She also gave my bank details to set up her direct debit and they still never asked to speak to me.
