The mother of the mini skirt died today. So sad to see another of the fashion icons of my youth gone. Hope you’re somewhere impossibly stylish clinking glasses with Viv, Mary.

Oh dear, how sad, but what a legacy she has left . She was one of the amazing women , I am including Biba , Zandra and Vivienne, whose energy and vision helped to empower women in the sixties to take control of their lives and fight for equality by telling us we could wear clothes that made a statement rather than echoing the clothes our mothers wore. Of course people had always had “going out clothes” but the clothes that Quant and Hulaniki especially were designing and selling on the high street ( though Quant clothes were prohibitively expensive , so most of us went for knock off copies) were clothes to be worn everyday, and they were hugely liberating.

My favourite Quant story is that she dyed her pubic hair red and shaved it into a heart shape , no one did that! What a woman.

RIP Mary Quant. I still remember my black Mary Quant dress with long trumpet sleeves and white piping round the neckline...I wore it on my 20th birthday when I was received into the Catholic church.
