Would you have this x-rayed? (Photo, but not too grim!)

Sustained a nasty fall on Sat, and think I've badly sprained my thumb. I still have some mobility, but can't put any pressure on it, which is making life challenging at the mo.

I've bought a splint on Amazon, that I'm wearing for the majority of the day and night, but my thumb looks a really weird shape! (Right hand pic)

I'd it was broken, surely I wouldn't be able to move it, and even if it is, they would just splint at the hospital, wouldn't they?

Really don't want to waste NHS time, so what do you think?

Well it doesn't look very happy does it? I think I'd probably wait a couple of days and if pain increases suck up the hell that is a&e or a walk in with an x-ray.

When I broke my finger it was very red, swollen and bruised but I could still move it, although painful.

With it being your thumb I’d get it checked. Obviously needing minor injuries or 111 is far from idea this week . Do you have a good pharmacist you could ask and see if they think it needs looking at?

to me It looks shorter than the other as well as wonky. Not being a medic I’m not sure if it would just be splinted or if anything else is needed. I don’t think being able to move something means it definitely isn’t broken or dislocated. I know quite a lot of people who have broken bones but could still wiggle fingers, toes. Sounds very painful.

I would probably get it checked. It depends how easy/difficult it is to get seen in your area. When I thought I had an issue with my foot - I rang GP - got a phone appt with nurse same day - and she sent me straight to x-ray, which was done in half an hour. It was crazy quick (that was about a month ago)

I didn't get my big toe checked years ago when I caught it in a bike pedal. I suspect I broke it at the time. It has fused now and doesn't bend at the joint, which is ok and not really an issue for me, but I say a thumb is more urgent!
