Do you think these leave entitlements include BHs?

It's for a London Borough and seems generous compared to what I'm used to, unless it includes Bank Holidays.

I don't think it does though because 24 days is less than the statutory entitlement if BHs are included? It's the extra 3 Christmas days that have confused me. Or maybe with those days it is enough and BHs are included?!

Do you think these leave entitlements include BHs?

I work in a government agency and it’s the same as we get, with bank holidays on top, so it looks right to me. The three days at Christmas will likely be so they can close down for a week - the two bank hols for Christmas Day and Boxing Day mean it only takes three extra days to make that week possible.

Public sector is traditionally generous on holiday and pensions to compensate for the lower salaries which have been the norm compared with the private sector.

Wow, I’m public sector in another country and those leave allowances are very generous for new entrants/lower grades.

28 days is the minimum. Either they are breaking the law or bank holidays are on top - though as the basic includes 3 days at Christmas shutdown that probably accounts for 2 bank holidays and it's only the remainder that are added.

Very standard in Local Government.

I work for an LA, we start on 28 days but have to take 3 of them at Christmas, then we get Bank Holidays on top. So usually 28 days plus 8 Bank Holidays but this year we get an extra day for the coronation.

The minimum is 28 days and may or may not include bank holidays. Employers may offer more than 28 days but not less

Statutory paid holiday

By law, you're entitled to 5.6 weeks' statutory paid holiday a year. Bank holidays might be included in this paid holiday – check your contract if you're not sure.

(For full time staff 5.6 × 5 = 28 days)

@dementedpixie yes, if your employer offers paid bank holidays then they can give you four weeks of paid leave on top. If they do not pay you for bank holidays then you have 28 days and deduct 8 of them for bank holidays and have four weeks of paid leave to take. Either way the minimum paid leave is 28 days.

Also, if your leave year runs April - April, which our LA does, there are 10 Bank.holidays, not 8 this year.

Easter 2024 is in March so Good Friday will fall in this year for anyone on a April to March annual leave year.

So anyone who works part time and gets their leave worked out proportionately, will have less choice over when they use their leave this year, due to the extra BHs, but will gain back next year, where there will only be 7 BHs.

New starters where I work get 23 days plus bank holidays. We have to keep 3 back for Christmas. I think 28 days is civil service, not universal.

The minimum is 28 days a year including bank holidays.

So 27 days a year can't include all the bank holidays.

I have just seen that this includes bank holidays, so where I work new starters get 31 days (23 + 8).
