DH 50th birthday ideas?

I realise I know him better than anyone, but am struggling. We have spent 2yrs renovating and still need to completely furnish the house and then start on the mud garden. He has had experience days previously, rarely drinks or plays games, no real hobbies and doesn't want a party. I've considered a BBQ smoker and leather apron, but then maybe a surprise weekend away from the house would be nice.

What things did you or other half like/enjoy?

You are right, you will know him best, but for us a weekend away was the best present of all for our respective 50th birthdays. Somewhere you have always wanted to go or somewhere where you feel you are away from the daily grind. Memories are more valuable to us than stuff, now!

If that's not something he/you like then the smoker sounds grreat or pick one household item you would need to get but get him the thing that he particularly covets, that would make him feel like this is 'his' thing. For my dh, that would be a particular chair. Not something that interests me AT ALL but I know would make him (irrationally) happy!

Oh god I’m in the same boat with an impossible to buy for DH and upcoming 50th. We are going on hol abroad for his birthday as a family to his favourite place , but I am stuck for gifts.
DH does drink so I have got him some of the Clarkson beer (he is a big Clarkson fan) and the only other I thing he might like is a good workbench as he doesn’t have one and does a lot of DIY.
DH hates experience days, does have any hobbies, hates parties and weekends away. Not interested in clothes. So hard!

*doesn’t have any hobbies

Why not ask him? My oh was 50 this year just wanted a quiet day at home. For mine we went to Singapore and Australia 🦘🌏 cos I like doing stuff.

Any interest in astronomy? A good pair of astral binoculars would cost around £100 or go up to c£400 if you really want to push the boat out) and make looking at the night sky an amazing experience, without all the messing around that using a telescope requires.

Triffid1 · 12/04/2023 21:08

Is ye doing any of the work on the house? A really good set of tools or a tool box or other high end/personalised equipment?

TeenagersAngst · 12/04/2023 21:28

We got married, had a big party and went on a cruise to Norway.

I'd go for a holiday /time away. The garden & house will still be there when you get back and will still need money spending on it
Take some time away for yourselves

whatsyourpoison12 · 12/04/2023 22:00

Leeds2 · 12/04/2023 22:37

An Ooni pizza oven.
A fire pit.

DiabolicalDee · 12/04/2023 22:40

Nice chair for the garden. Telescope, watch, painting of the house or a pet.

My husband recently turned 50 and I found it difficult what to buy him. I decided on a American BBQ cooking class, he is looking forward to it.

maddy68 · 12/04/2023 22:58

Some great ideas everyone, thank you so much.

@Greensleevevssnotnose Yes, I have asked him multiple times since last year what he'd like and he just says 'for the house to be finished'

@whatsyourpoison12 A friend was given a taxidermy class for her birthday and stuffed a squirrel! DH is very squeamish though, so he might not cope making a wall mounted deer 😂

@Leeds2 The pizza oven and fire pit are things we are planning on getting, so spot on!
