Hellmann's mayo

bananaskin123 · 12/04/2023 19:37

Could be just me but does anyone else think the recipe has changed. I've been a great fan of Hellmanns light mayo but now it seems "gloopy" and tasteless. I know "lighter" products sometimes have less flavour but up until recently the lighter version was OK.

Anyone else noticed a change?

I haven't but only have the original, I've always thought the 'lighter' one was disgusting and tasted off.

I'm thinking of switching to the vegan one once my jar is done, but am not expecting great things!

Sunshineandrainbow · 12/04/2023 20:03

Strangley mine has seemed to separate in the fridge.

DorisParchment · 12/04/2023 20:08

The Hellmans mayo that you get in U.K. does not compare with the Hellmans that we get in continental Europe. DD takes home jars of the European stuff when she visits. Ours has mustard in it, wine vinegar and probably more salt. But it does actually taste of something!

I use the vegan one. My partner prefers it to the other one despite not being vegan. Hope you like it if you try it.

My son uses the non vegan one, but not the light one, and has said the last few jars have tasted different.

I've never tried their "real" mayo but the vegan one is quite decent. I always found mayo tasty but too heavy, the vegan one is just perfect for me. Word of advice though, buy the Jar version, not the squeezy bottle. The latter doesn't squeeze the contents out properly, I had to throw it away about a quarter full.

Don't throw it out. I had the same infuriating issue with the squeezy bottle, and I was in such a rage that I got out my Stanley knife and sliced the bottom of the bottle off! Tons left inside which I extracted with my small spatula.

I wouldn't give the manufacturers the satisfaction of dumping perfectly good mayo. But it's definitely jars from now on.

I may need to calm down too lol. 🙄

Titsywoo · 12/04/2023 20:25

I've starting mixing half normal Hellmans and half the light one since the light one is pretty tasteless but the normal one just has too many calories - I actually don't really notice the difference.

Probably the same stuff that sainsbury sell on their 'Around the world' or whatever its called shelves
I think it's Polish
In a glass jar and it's delicious
Not looked at the calorie content as you need so little of it

dementedpixie · 12/04/2023 20:38

I use heinz or own make stuff as I got so annoyed with the squeezy hellmans bottle

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 12/04/2023 20:39

Lidl's own Batt's 'Real Mayonnaise' has won me over.

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/04/2023 20:42

Sainsburys lighter mayo is Ok I guess

But I buy delouis full fat which is really pretty good for bottled

Babysharkdoodoodood · 12/04/2023 20:46

Love the vegan one. Actually has flavour. Also the Polish ones In Morrisons. They're usually cheaper as well.

ClassicLib · 12/04/2023 20:46

After watching one of those ‘food factory’ type documentaries about the manufacture of low fat mayonnaise, I no longer buy low fat mayonnaise.

GlassBunion · 12/04/2023 20:48

You need to try Winary Majonez.
It's Polish and is an absolute game changer. It's been mentioned before on MN a few times.

It's sold , in Tesco alongside other mayonnaise.

Great work, wish I'd thought to do that too - I felt so cheated and angry at the time, I just tossed it and didn't buy again!

LuluBlakey1 · 12/04/2023 21:55

Generally anything labelled 'low fat', 'reduced fat' or similar is a chemical shit show and best avoided- much better to just factor in the original to daily calories.

All mayo in mainland Europe is gross, ew.

It looked so promising, but it's so sweet! God knows how much sugar it's got in it. Inedible.

The only mayo worth buying is Amora Mayonnaise de Dijon.

I make my own mayo full stop. It's really easy and only has 4 ingredients.

I wouldn't buy mayonnaise at all anymore.

Mollypolly2610 · 13/04/2023 17:12

I used to swear by Hellmans but in the ME we got Heinz Chilli Mayo. It was amazing. Came back to the UK and couldn't find it - got in touch with them and they don't do it here.

Went back to Hellmans but recently find it separates and is watery. Not sure about trying the Lidl and Aldi ones.

Would you mind sharing your recipe please @GreyCarpet and how long can you store it for ?

Of course, I use...

150ml light in colour/flavour olive oil or almond oil
1 egg (room temperature)
Dijon mustard and apple cider vinegar to taste.

If everything is room temperature it's easy - put it all in a jug and use a stick blender. The trick is to put the stick blender to the bottom of the jug and don't move it until you hear the sound change when it's emulsified. Then raise it very slightly and repeat. Don't move the blender at all or it doesn't thicken properly. No idea why!

Takes 3 or 4 mins and keeps in the fridge for a fortnight.

It's lovely!

HandbagsAtDawns · 14/04/2023 13:45

Thank you so much @GreyCarpet !

IanDorsetshire · 07/02/2025 03:47

I've recently bought Hellmans mayonnaise, it is now watery, it used to be lovely and thick and did not spread out on the plate when squeezed out, I had it in the fridge when I opened it so not like I had it out at room temperature! Won't be buying it again and I'll be trying alternatives, very disappointing it's now watery as loved it with some fries, but it's now ruined, Hellmans think we would not notice like other companies reducing the quality of their products, but we have! 😡

JMSA · 07/02/2025 03:59

Squeezy bottles of mayo are absolutely not fit for purpose.
These bottles work for a thinner sauce, such as ketchup, but mayo is too creamy and thick.
It has actually bugged me for a long time!
Sorry OP, not actually what you asked Blush
