I'm in Norwich for a couple of days and need somewhere nice but under £30 a head to eat. Any suggestions? Thanks.

The Waffle House.

Agree The Waffle House is good, and it's been around forever, so they know what they're doing.
Pubs in the golden triangle are usually pretty good - the Unthank, Eagle, & William & Florence, or the Arlington at the George hotel, also the Red Lion at Bishopgate if you're in the city centre, or the Cellar House in Eaton if you're further out. The Assembly Rooms look offputtingly posh, but the staff are LOVELY & you can turn up in jeans & trainers to have really good food in amazing surroundings without feeling like an outcast.
I think - but don't quote me on this - that the Sir Garnet have stopped doing food in-house now, but they do let you bring in food from the market? You can't get much more central than that.

Consider the Vine.
Grosvenor Fish Bar for evening take away F&C, market for day time bacon butties & other take aways.

I always return to The Wine Cellar

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 12/04/2023 21:16

I'm agreeing with everyone else's suggestions! Basically, if you're in central Norwich, then pretty much the area around the lanes & cathedral quarter are packed with independent places to eat/drink. It depends what you're looking for tbh?

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 12/04/2023 21:18

@cheapskatemum I keep intending to go to The Wine Cellar, but haven't made it yet. I think because it's so tucked away I always forget it's there?

Omg! I am so thrilled the waffle house is still open. It was our end of term treat as students almost 30 years ago....

moistclam · 12/04/2023 21:29

Orlando's Japanese restaurant for sure!

I'm from Norwich originally and whenever I go back I go to the Waffle House ❤️

I had a great pizza at Donnelli's recently.

Head in the clouds is still going too!

Trattoria Rustica on Princes Street - family run Italian

The Dining Rooms - lovely building, great food

Bishops - fine dining, pricey in the evening but if you’re going at lunchtime they do a very reasonable set menu.

nythbran2 · 12/04/2023 21:50

Thanks very much everyone. Will certainly visit the Waffle House. It smells great. I used to go to the vibe when it was a pub, glad to hear it's still good as a restaurant

But they don't let you take in your own booze now!

My partner was at UEA 78-81 And that was the great bit.

By the way, check closing times. We went last month and the Waffle House closes at 9pm and Captain America's at 8pm, except on Saturday when it's 9.

For a university city in term time the city seemed absolutely dead after 8.30.

cheapskatemum · 13/04/2023 16:19

@sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea I'm quite happy for it to remain a well-kept secret Grin. Seriously though, I love that it does meat or fish & veg dishes really well. I usually have one of the specials. The other great thing of course, is the extensive wine list.

nythbran2 · 13/04/2023 18:35

Thanks very much for recommendations. I had lunch at the Waffle house and supper at the Vine. Both excellent
