Would you still be entitled to ask for a refund?

If you ordered cookies from someone online, and accidentally entered the wrong address and the address you entered didn't exist, and the sender didn't specify a return address, would you be entitled to ask the sender for a refund?

No. You entered the wrong address. Your mistake. No recourse for a refund.

SmileyPaella · 11/04/2023 19:10

It's still cost the same amount for the company because of no fault of their own. So why would anyone expect a refund?

LondonLovie · 11/04/2023 19:10

Why should the business foot the bill for someone else's mistake? No refund

Flypl · 11/04/2023 19:13

Okay, thank you guys!

They might be happy to send a replacement box as a gesture of goodwill - it's worth asking

SmileyPaella · 11/04/2023 19:18

@Flypl so are you the buyer or seller?

I am the seller.
It's one of my first orders so I'm quite new to this and wasn't sure what to do.

@Flypl

If you're a new business, even though you're completely in the right...you may want to offer some form of goodwill gesture to build on your reputation and help build a customer base. But up to you to know what's best in these specific circumstances

Would offering to refund half the amount be a good gesture?

OP posts:

I don't see why not. Or offer them a new order with 50% off? Depends how snarky the customer is!

Will do. Thank you so much!

You don't have to offer a refund or good will gesture at all in these circumstances, just because you're a new seller. It's their mistake 100%. You should not be out of pocket because someone guava the wrong address. Also are you sure they're not scamming you? You need to have strict policies in place for this kind of thing to make sure people don't take the piss out of you.

Ethically, the food business did their best to send your order. The error was your fault. Technically, your card provider may do a chargeback for non-receipt of goods if you call them.

How was the address given to you@Flypl ?
Over the phone, typed into a website? If the customer doesnt know their address why would they expect you to be out of pocket?

It was typed as a text message.
They confirmed it twice as well.
It's only when they looked a third time that they realised they had given me the wrong one

Sorry, I missed yosaid they put it the website, in that case as you have written proof that they have you the wrong address so it's a bit cheeky of them to expect a refund

Have they asked you for a refund? If so on what grounds?

Was it the wrong house number, the wrong street name? Im trying to imagine how they got it wrong

It was the wrong number, yes they want a refund because they called the Royal Mail but the parcel hasn't reached their return facility or something along those lines

I've unfortunately already said I could issue them a partial refund, so I'm not sure I can withdraw that offer

Probably too late on this occasion but use it as a lesson for the future and make it clear that the order will be sent to the addreaa the customer gives and you are in no way liable if they get it wrong

Also get some nice stickers with your addesss on so that parcels can be returned to you if there are future mixups

If you buy postage online, the RM system soon tells you if you got given a naff address.
