Online refunds

I’ve just had an experience that I’ve not have before with a retailer and wondered if it was normal. I wanted to return an item, it was an online order, but the website wouldn’t recognise my email or order number. I phoned customer service and they asked for my name after I explained the issue. They then just refunded me for the item, straight away and said to return the item to my nearest store “at my convenience”. Why would they refund without the item? How do they know I’m going to return it? (I will, but the physical store is not at all nearby, so will take me ages to get round to it).
Is this something that often happens with some retailers? I’ve never shopped with this particular one before, but with amazon etc you don’t get a refund until you’ve sent the item
back.

Probably not worth the effort or hassle of dealing with it. Unlikely it was a high value item.

Plus people are generally honest and the chances are good you will return it as asked.

Some people will be honest and some won’t.

The amount they lose to the dishonest ones will be less than it would cost them to go through all the hassle of making sure items were returned before issuing the refund.

They have access to all the stats and have decided to take the risk
