Rainy day things to do near Dumfries please!!

Okay, so we have picked the wrong week to visit Southerness near Dumfries. It's looking very wet this week, and I have not researched or planned enough. We're staying in a caravan and I'm not getting much mobile signal. Can anyone recommend any good rainy day activities in this area? We have full waterproofs etc and are quite outdoorsy, but also want to do more than just coastal walks in the rain 😬 2 adults and 1 fairly easily pleased 7 year old. Any suggestions? If I disappear it's WiFi related!

Cocoa bean at Twynholm, Dalscone fun farm, Kirkcudbrights nice for a walk with lovely shops and marina. Not too much indoors though but there's a swimming pool there as well as DG1 leisure centre in Dumfries. Annan had a cinema and Gretna has a shopping outlet plus the famous wedding venue you can get out of the rain a lot there. Wanlockhead lead mining museum is great but some outdoors. Rain or not the red kites are well worth a visit in Galloway forest. It's a covered viewing area and a little indoor cafe. Sadly in Scotland you can't let the rain stop play.
There is loads to do in this area so hopefully the rains not set to be too bad. I have gardening to do!! Enjoy.

And the wild deer park is near the red kites and that's all weather with a little
deer hide there. Take a bag of carrots and the deer will eat out of your hands.

Mabie Farm park
Dumfries ice bowl for skating
Rockcliff, great rock pooling beach

There’s a museum in Dumfries which was surprisingly good for my 2 dc (11&12).

Dalscone is excellent. It's has the cleanest soft play I have ever been to and a brilliant toy shop. It's not open on Sundays.

Thank you all! Better advice than I could get on any tourism website!

It’s a lovely morning here, get down to the beaches near Kirkcudbright. When and if the weather turns go to Cocoa Bean, then head into Kirkcudbright and visit the Art Gallery. The above suggestions are all great.
Its been quite nice weather since last Thursday, but tomorrow could be wet, although it often blows over quite quickly.

Beebumble2 · 11/04/2023 10:04

Meant to mention Threave NTS gardens and Threave Castle at Castle Douglas.

Margarita45 · 11/04/2023 10:09

Cocoabean and Dino Park in Currutherstown.

Does Cream o'Galloway still do their ice cream making sessions?

HadEnoughOfBears · 11/04/2023 10:33

Heads of Ayr farm park?

Yes, you have to book in advance. They also do cheese making. The adventure playground seems to be closed, I don’t know why, but the walks around the farmland are lovely.

Businessflake · 11/04/2023 11:16

Ernespie Farm at Castle Douglas?

Heads of Ayr farm park?

It is a great day out but quite a trek from Southerness.

HadEnoughOfBears · 11/04/2023 12:59

@QualityTweet our friends used to own a caravan at Southerness and that was a fave place to go when we were down for the weekend 🤷‍♀️

Gem museum at Creetown

I think there are lovely woodland walks there too.

Also Kirkcudbright for Dark Space Planetarium

Read Sputnik's Guide to Life by Frank Cottrell-Boyce to your 7 year old while you are there. It's hilarious!

Walk across the bay to Paul Jones's House, v. Interesting with lego galleon for kids to play with.

JJ s fish supper and visit the arcade next door.

Galloway Ice-cream Farm is good and adventure play for kids.

Mabie Farm Park is brilliant.

Hire bikes in Galloway Forest, or do a stargazing tour.

Sweetheart Abbey in New Abbey is lovely, nice spot for lunch at pub nearby.

If you fancy a drive mull of Galloway lighthouse is an excellent bird sanctuary.

Seafood in Portpatrick.

Thanks again! The weather has been better than expected so far, so fingers crossed for another nice (or at least dry) day tomorrow

Cream of Galloway is good but not sure how far it is from Dumfries. Heads of Ayr is great, but probably not worth the drive to get to to be honest, could be almost 2 hours each way depending on what route you take.

I had no idea the Gem Rock museum was still open, remember going there as a kid!

AngryPrincess · 12/04/2023 10:46

JM Barrie/ Peter Pan House, Caerlaverock Castle, (one of my favourite castles), and Caerlaverock Wetland Centre, (that is outdoors though).

Enjoy!

AngryPrincess · 12/04/2023 10:50

Also, if you’re in Kirkcudbright, the galleries have some of the Viking Hoard that was found nearby. Definitely worth a look. Kirkcudbright Galleries - right on the Main Street. Roadworks therer though. Also, in Kirkcudbright museum, Tollbooth, lots of art galleries, and the Gallovidian Bookshop is great.

Beebumble2 · 12/04/2023 11:18

Lovely day here, a few showers, a bit of wind. That’s in the west of the region, could be raining in Southerness.
Four seasons in a day is not unusual! Coastal climate.
