Hi - DH & I are staying in Waterloo to go to a couple of West End shows in late Aug/ early Sept. DH’s 60th is on the day we arrive so I was hoping for recommendations for a nice place to eat that evening.

The Anchor and Hope is one of my favourite restaurants - it's a pub but with fabulous food and great cocktails- very classy.

Alternatively Paladar (South American), Lupins (small plates), Bar Duoro (Portuguese), Bala Baya (Middle Eastern). Loads of fab independent spots in the area!

There’s not many special places directly in Waterloo - there’s a tonne of chains or some fairly average local spots.

But its very well connected to everywhere, so Id think about what you fancy for his 60th then work out how easy it is to get there.

To get you started, how about the Wolsey (2 stops up the Jubilee line), or Cinnamon Club (quick walk to Westminster).

Skylon for a view of the river

Skylon for a view of the river

I was just mulling over Skyon. Great view but quite fussy food and a slightly strange atmosphere (think I had foam and a bed of hay last time I ate there).

I'd probably wander along the river to the Oxo Tower Brasserie.

The Delaunay just over Waterloo bridge

The oxo tower.

I'd sort of agree re Skylon being fussy. If you eat in the bar you'd have the view as well as a cocktail and a snack that involves less hay/foam.
Dh and I had a memorable lunch at Anchor and Hope years ago, a giant delicious gamey lasagna that we never thought we'd finish but we ate every scrap and scraped the dish clean. We still talk about it occasionally.
