Would you eat this?

Pine nuts that say best before March 2020! Didn’t know they’d been in there that long 😂 was about to buy some yesterday and dd2 piped up that we had a new unopened bag in the cupboard.
Does anything bad happen to pine nuts? I’m usually someone who eats everything but I don’t eat nuts (don’t know if a pine nut is technically a nut but I don’t eat them anyway) so no idea if I’m going to poison someone with these or if best to just bin them!

Just try them. They may have gone stale but they may also be fine. They aren't going to make you ill

I think the oil in them will have deteriorated by now, so they will taste off.

No the oil in the nuts (about 40% if I remember correctly) will have gone rancid by now.

I'm not usually fussy about best before dates but even I would draw the line at that. They would be in the bin.

Just to be pedantic, pine nuts are actually seeds not nuts, but the rancid factor still applies!

But if they taste ok, they are ok. The rancid thing is to do with temperature change and light, I think. Dark cupboard, should be fine.

Just looked it up. It's exposure to oxygen that's the issue. So a sealed bag is fine.

They'll probably be rancid because of the high fat content but give them a nibble.

Taste & smell test for me. Oils in nuts can go rancid, I'm pretty sensitive to that taste. If they taste/smell fine, then I deem to be perfectly edible.

No absolutely not. They might be mouldy or even have tiny mites inside them.

I did end up giving it a go, it didn’t taste rancid so they’ve gone in the dish. Will report back if anyone dies 😂😂

Haha we are all alive!

@doadeer i don’t really take heed of any dates to be honest, use my nose most of the time. But I consider that I keep my cupboards in good order and regularly clean them out and bin anything that’s not going to be used! But I guess as these were unopened they made the cut and I didn’t even think to check!
