If you have been to Bruges and found some excellent chocolate shops can you please give me a recommendation. I feel like there will be so many I won't know which ones are good! TIA

There's not many that actually make their own chocolate.

Agree.

Argh! I went to Bruges and found the BEST chocolate shop. Utterly to die for. And can’t for the life of me remember its name! I do remember when you opened the door you went down a step into a small shop room, then could go down more steps into a larger room of chocolate goodness. Not very helpful, sorry!

Enjoy Bruges! It’s such a lovely place!

@00100001 oh that's a shame, I wasn't expecting that 😕

@NC4785 haha no worries! I shall try and hunt for it. Did it have a cafe in it as well or just a shop? Thank you!

My family tends to go for Leonidas but it's been a long time since we lived there!

So1invictus · 08/04/2023 19:58

Leonidas would be my choice too.

SleepingisanArt · 08/04/2023 20:12

Leonidas is the ONLY choice as far as we are concerned!

MoggyMittens23 · 08/04/2023 20:16

Ok sounds like Leonidas is the place to go!

Google where they actually make it on site because lots are just imported

Xiaoxiong · 08/04/2023 20:59

The only one we saw that seemed to be fully local to Bruges was Dumon - there are a couple of branches dotted about the place.

The Chocolate Line was excellent too!

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 08/04/2023 21:02

Leonidas are our go-to as well.

With having a look at The Chocolate Line, too

TheIsleOfTheLost · 08/04/2023 21:03

I love the Leonidas ones and they are cheaper than the posher ones. The Manon are signature flavour with white chocolate, coffee cream and praline base. If you get them to give you a mix, avoid the pineapple ones!

CakeIsNotAvailable · 08/04/2023 21:04

This thread has reminded me that I went to Bruges in a heatwave (34 degrees!) and couldn't buy any chocolate 😂

We got the impression that Bruges had been taken over by the mafia:

One family had all the chocolate shops, another the frites, another the tapestries... And that's basically everything on sale in Bruges.

Leonidas is nice - there are a few branches in London though.

BotterMon · 08/04/2023 21:16

Belgian here.

Leonidas. You can make up your own choice of chocolates in a box. We get a box of just Manons with the nuts on top and then another with marzipan and ganache ones with a few others for good measure. The Giunduja ones are lovely. Leonidas aren't specific to Bruges and are found throughout Belgium. You can freeze them too.

The best in Bruges imo is The Chocolate Line who make their own bean to bar chocolate. Also worth a visit is the chocolate museum.

Leonidas is lovely but when I lived in Belgium my favourite was Neuhaus. A bit pricier than Leonidas but so good. There used to be a lovely Neuhaus chocolate shop in Brussels with a cafe that did amazing hot chocolate.

NC4785 · 09/04/2023 13:18

@MoggyMittens23 It was Dumon! I Google mapped the suggestions above and it was that one 😂

Tiggy321 · 09/04/2023 13:34

I live in Belgium and Leonidas are the cheap, mass produced stuff! If you want the best chocolate in my opinion, look for Pierre Marcolini. You will need to remortgage your house but way superior to Leonidas. Neuhaus is also good and better than Leonidas but not quite as amazing as Pierre Marcolini. There is huge snob factor attached to chocolate here !!

12stars · 09/04/2023 14:11

I almost mentioned Marcolini @Tiggy321 but thought of the price 😁

Monkeybutt1 · 09/04/2023 14:49

Would definitely recommend the chocolate museum it's really good.

I think we went to this one, very quaint

LadyEloise1 · 09/04/2023 16:16

A lovely coffee shop to visit is Aux Merveilleux de Fred, they have branches in Brussels and Ghent too and are in the US, France, Japan and London etc

If visiting Brussels or Ghent, Frites Atelier do the best chips. Their truffle chips are so delicious.

mynameiscalypso · 09/04/2023 16:22

I agree that Leonidas and Neuhaus are fine but mass produced (and easily available in London at least - I can walk to three Leonidas from where I live and there's a Neuhaus that's popped up in Waterloo Station. I'd definitely go for one that's actually making chocolates there and then.

MoggyMittens23 · 09/04/2023 20:00

Ok thank you everyone will check out the recommendations.

@Monkeybutt1 we are doing a chocolate making workshop there, very excited!
