In retail, how common is it for junior managers to work their day off?

DS1 is deputy manager of a small store in a large retail chain. The manager has had some significant family issues so DS seems to have been picking up some of his slack. They've also had some sickness issues with Covid and other bugs.

DS has worked at least part of his day off for weeks, usually at short notice because someone called in sick.

It's none if my business, he seems happy to do it and is enjoying the responsibility of stepping up, but I worry about the impact on him/how sustainable it is for him.

Also there's something nagging me that he might not be telling me the truth about where he is on those days. Again, none of my business if he doesn't want to tell me, but it also worries me that he up to something he can't tell me about.

Parenting young adults is by far the hardest stage so far, I'm finding!!!

It's very normal in my experience!
