omeprazole for reflux

A few days ago I got a calcium tablet stuck in my oesophagus. It has nor cleared by ever since I have had bad acid reflux. I have tried gaviscon but it is not helping.

I picked up some omeprazole in the pharmacy and was wondering about experiences of it. I looked at reviews here and they look a bit worrying in relation to causing anxiety etc.https://www.drugs.com/comments/omeprazole/for-gastroesophageal-reflux-disease.html#:~:text=Omeprazole%20has%20an%20average%20rating,51%25%20reported%20a%20negative%20experience. Has anyone tried it? Getting a bit desperate as feeling rough and it is constant and not linked to food and no hope of seeing a gp for a few days.

I’ve been taking omeprazole daily for over ten years following gastric problems and surgery, with no side effects at all. I have recently developed perimenopausal anxiety, but it’s nothing to do with the omeprazole. It’s a very commonly prescribed drug, often as a protective against erosion of the stomach lining from taking NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and aspirin.

However, I don’t think you should be self medicating with it (I know you can buy it over the counter now, but still) - you need a diagnosis of what’s wrong before you know that a proton pump inhibitor is the right treatment. Get on to your doctor for an appointment to check out what has happened - an injury further up your digestive tract won’t suddenly cause over production of stomach acid, so I can’t see how omeprazole would be an appropriate treatment.

@MoongazyHare Thanks for your reply and glad to hear it worked for you. I think you are right that it needs a gp assessment, I was surprised to find it over the counter. If GP services were better I would wait but I am a bit worried about damage in the meantime to my oesophagus from all the acid. I was wondering if perhaps the valve had been damaged or if the damage was lower down.

Might wait until tomorrow to see if things improve.
