Help with car insurance for 17 year old please.

My son (17 yo) is soon to take his driving test. I'm going to buy him a car of his own (a class 1) when he passed

I thought about owning the car myself and just adding him to my insurance. But I guess this is illegal as I wouldn't be driving the car much.

I would like him to earn his own no claims years.

So do I need to have him as the car owner and for him to have his own policy? I'm worried about the insurance cost though.

Help and advice please😩

You can be the car owner but he needs to be listed as the principal driver if that is the case and do list you as a second driver as this usually reduces the cost. He'll probably need a black box to get the price down too

You can be the registered keeper but if he is the main driver then insurance has to be in his name.

It will be expensive - Can be made (a bit) cheaper by having you - or any other experienced, claim free driver as a named driver. There are also black box schemes which can be cheaper.

A box is installed in the car which records all driver it registeres things like heavy braking and poor cornering so their driving continues to be monitored. The cost is based on the amount of mileage covered.

Try Admiral - we got a good deal with them for my 17 year old on a 1 litre polo with mum and dad also insured.

IMO, steer clear of any companies who offer the "black box" as an app on your phone. We found these to be wildly inaccurate in terms of reporting both the location and the speed of the car

Thanks. Would it be better if he was the registered keeper?

We got a black box for our ds

It cost £800 with a black box and would have been £2,800 without

Have a look at marmalade. Our ds has passed his test recently and they were the best for us.

I got the best price from Marmalade when my son was learning a few years ago, but also check your own insurer and Admiral to see if you would get a better price with a multi-car policy
And definitely check MSE
