Norfolk villages?

Any recommendations for a holiday location. Coastal cottages tend to cost an arm and a leg, and I'd be quite happy with somewhere that was a) within an easy drive of a beach/cliffs etc b) near footpaths for pleasant walking and c) also not too far from Norwich as we'd want to spend time in/near the City Centre.

Accommodation can just be simple and clean - hot tubs/other luxury item not required. Older cottages with more character are my preference.

Cleo next to sea is quietish and has a range of ok cost places. Good walks and easy drive to lots of busier places

Attictroll · 05/04/2023 12:09

Cley damn auto correct

JimmyDurham · 05/04/2023 12:49

I would say anywhere in North Norfolk EXCEPT Holt (too many 4x4s and twats). We've had nice holidays in Great Bircham, Northrepps and Roughton.

LaGiaconda · 05/04/2023 12:59

Ah, I'd been wondering about Holt. Thanks for the warning!

Wells/Holkham, the nicest in my experience.

We have stayed in Holt several times and loved it! Lots of nice places for food and drinks, not far from Norwich and beautiful beaches close by. Not noticed 4x4s and twats! I can thoroughly recommend Bird Box Cottage booked through Air BnB, it's beautiful, super clean and cosy.

I’d also say Holt, ( especially as we’ve got rid of our 4x4 😂). It’s got lots of lovely shops, restaurants and pubs.
Weybourne is not far away, has lovely beach, walks and a good gastro pub.

JumpToRecipe · 05/04/2023 17:01

I was about to suggest Holt. I do not drive a 4x4 and don’t think I’m a twat (although I suppose that’s what a twat would say).

JumpToRecipe · 05/04/2023 17:03

Alternatively have you considered actually staying in Norwich? It’s only 45 mins drive to the coast around Happisburgh.

winelove · 05/04/2023 17:07

Nothing wrong with Holt, it is lovely, nice bar, restaurants and shops.
Wells also nice but more seasidy and very busy in the school holidays but I do like it.
Thorham/Brancaster/Holme/Holkan very nice a few pubs around. Considered posh (as does Holt)
Heacham and Hustanton, long pebble beach you can walk for miles, less posh.

East & West Runton, not far from Cromer, could suit you.

hexsnidgett · 05/04/2023 18:00

I love Overstrand and Southrepps also Sea Palling and Waxham.

Wells next the sea and from there Holkam beach which is absolutely beautiful my favourite place

bilbodog · 05/04/2023 18:40

Always overlooked but gorleston has the most beautiful beach - just next door to gt yarmouth for tacky stuff if you want some, 40 mins from norwich and easy access to countryside and north suffolk as well. Probably a bit cheaper for places to stay as most people ignore it because of yarmouths reputation.

Ndd135632 · 05/04/2023 18:48

Surprised nobody has said Blakeney. Beautiful. Wells, Holkham, Stiffkey, Morston, Binham, Langham. All lovely OP

Millicentmargaretamandaholden · 05/04/2023 19:00

I really liked Holt but it’s further away from other places on the list and not at all close to Norwich.

The place that has had an unpleasant description reminded me of Burnham Market (not Holt). If you know any German Burnham Market is one of the most schickimiki places I’ve ever encountered!

Xarrie · 05/04/2023 19:55

Wells next the sea is hell on earth if it's even mildly sunny.

SilentHedges · 05/04/2023 20:33

Overstrand is very nice. Deserted beaches. I did a coastal walk and didn't see any one for miles.
