Sending parcels to Germany

Why is it so difficult! I know why really, because of Brexit. All I want to do is return Ds1's coat to him which he left here when he was last here. It already belongs to him, it is worthless in monetary value, yet the parcel has been in customs for days, finally appeared to clear yesterday and now seems to be back in customs and they want more money or information or both. I have written that it already belongs to him all over the customs info and that the value is £5. The address is a student hall of residence which would make it fairly likely I am telling the truth. I posted it more than a week ago and it's still not there. Bloody Brexit!

If anyone has any tips for sending stuff to Europe like this, I would much appreciate it.

No real advice OP but am located in Germany and unfortunately there are stories around about how wildly divergent different regional customs offices are in handling parcels from outside the EU customs area. Some are very relaxed, some incredibly anal.

No tips but lots of sympathy. I was little nephews who live in Portugal and I used to send them Christmas and birthday presents. It's a nightmare now so I just send money into my sister's account for them but it's not the same! Little ones are so fun to buy for.

My only advice is don't do it! I'm in the EU and have a big birthday coming up and have reminded everyone not to send me anything. Sadly the hassle and expense is just not worth it.

Thank you for the sympathy. Well it makes me feel slightly better to know it's not just me. I'm still so fed up about Brexit even after all this time.

Me too Saker! It is just the rubbish gift that keeps on giving...

Bananalanacake · 05/04/2023 13:32

My mum wanted to send a box of gifts to me in Germany and she had to take out a bottle of perfume.

My son and DIL are in Finland. Now I buy presents online from local websites or they get early/late presents if visits are timed right.

Even worse, neither Cheshire cheese nor slim and save are now available to France.
