Putting loo lid down when flushing

I heard this a few years ago, that you should put lid down when flushing to escape spray.

Is this a load of cobblers? Do you do this?

I am still slightly annoyed at having to battle the toilet yesterday with a loo brush (the final resort) as it hadn't been cleaned so my mind is on loo related matters!

I don’t know if it does stop spray but I always put lid down it’s just a habit . I don’t like when someone leaves it up but then I could be a bit ocd

Errolwasahero · 03/04/2023 18:14

We’ve always done this; just seems like common sense!

Errolwasahero · 03/04/2023 18:16

Also using a silicon ‘brush’ to clean it with. Much better than bristles! 😎

Always put the lids down but then our toilets are all wall hung so the flush is behind the lids when they are up.
I also think it looks far neater when the lids are down.

You're far more sophisticated than we are.

It just made me a bit angry earlier having to brandish a brush because no-one else was going to do it.

I'll have to Google toilet lids but I prefer them down

Try standing in front of it with bare legs as you flush. That's enough proof for me!

Bluevelvetsofa · 03/04/2023 18:31

Always put the lid down.

Babdoc · 03/04/2023 18:34

I vaguely remember my old professor of microbiology, back in my medical school days, saying that if you close the lid, the aerosol spray of faecal bacteria actually spreads further, contaminating more of your bathroom, as it comes out under pressure through the small gap between lid and seat. No idea if he was right, but I notice my teaching hospital had no lids on the loos!

Yikes!

OK lid down, I live with 2 men. Nothing else would force me to use a toilet brush, tossers

I always put the lid down and so does my dc, thankfully. I was on holiday with a group and kept my toothbrush in my bedroom, as most people leave the lid up 🤮

Mistymoonsinastarrysky · 03/04/2023 18:45

Always put it down, what’s the point of having a lid if you don’t use it!?

It's to sit on while clipping your toenails!

Kingsize · 03/04/2023 18:48

Always down, its quite disgusting to leave it open

Natsku · 03/04/2023 18:48

I always put it down and trained everyone else in the house to do so too.

HappyMe6 · 03/04/2023 18:51

I always put lid down I absolutely hate to see toilet lids up when not in use

happinessischocolate · 03/04/2023 18:52

On QI a few years ago they said that the spray from the toilet was a myth and there's no danger to your toothbrush

I do put the seat down but dont get stressed that the kids don't

AllIeveknewonlyou · 03/04/2023 19:00

I'm glad you all agree with me as this has been driving me bonkers.

Admittedly I am still annoyed at having to clean the loo so I'm irascible

Always put it down before flushing. When I was having chemo, they told me to put the lid down and flush twice

DidyouNO · 03/04/2023 19:17

We have the original Victorian (1880) toilet downstairs in our house. It was once the 'outhouse' loo but the house was extended to incorporate it. It's a huge carved oak toilet seat but there's no lid to it. It wasn't made that way and we haven't died yet 😁

America12 · 03/04/2023 19:21

Yes it stops bacteria spraying everywhere.

AllIeveknewonlyou · 03/04/2023 19:27

No you don't die from it. You brought back a memory of having to pull the chord.

But it's disgusting they don't clean up their poo

Always been a lid down girl. Sometimes when ExH picks up the kids he asks the use to loo and leaves seat and lid up. Swear he does it just to annoy me.

Disneyblueeyes · 03/04/2023 19:35

I don't usually and I'm still here.
