Miracle cold cures

My dad is coming over today. He lives the other side of the world. I've not seen him for 5yrs, dd was a toddler, ds was in nappies. I've got the worst stinking cold. Had it a week and a half and now descended into full on snot. Any tips to help me find some energy, be less snotty, help it naff the hell off, and prevent contaminating my dad?! Is there a miracle cure I somehow don't know about!!

Morrisons own brand cold and flu capsules, I swear by them!

Zinc to support your immune system. Take all year round, every day, if you are prone to cold sores.

Day Nurse to help you get through the day and Night Nurse for sleep. (Beware, & don’t take paracetamol with the above as I believe they both already contain Paracetamol & you could overdose).

Get well soon.

Thank you both!

Try an antihistamine /hayfever medication to help dry up your runny your nose (might not work but worth a try).

If you're staying in with your dad, open the windows a little, let the fresh air in to flush the bugs out and minimise the chance of your dad catching it. If I wanted to hug him I'd wash my hands and put on a face mask.

Hope you feel better soon and can enjoy your time with your dad.

Berocca helps to find some energy and maybe even get over it quicker

In addition to other remedies, I have been using these Effervescent Echinacea tablets from Boots for the last 20 years. They don’t cure a well developed cold but they do significantly reduce the symptoms, and if I take them early enough (I do get a warning tickle in my throat), I manage to avoid the cold developing.

I also load up on some strong alcohol for purely medicinal purposes 😀

Could you try and steam out the snot? Get a big bowl with a towel on top and lift the corner and put in some boiling water, leave it a minute and then put your head under the towel keeping your eyes closed?
I hope you feel a bit better and have a lovely time with your dad.

Day Nurse every time (that's if you can still buy it).

erikbloodaxe · 03/04/2023 07:54

DayNight nurse. The liquid not the tablets. It's £8-£9 a bottle and you can only buy it from a pharmacy. Bloody wonder stuff!

Reluctantadult · 03/04/2023 08:02

Never tried day / night nurse. Is it a decongestant then?

Acetilcisteine is very good for clearing up snot , not sure about brand name in the UK, but normally medicines marketed for flu and cold (I.e. not just paracetamol or ibuprofen) contain it.

Vicks Vaporub at night on your feet with socks on top and on your chest. It will stink but it helps.
I read about it here, and it really helps.
