How old for child email address?

We are thinking of setting up each child with a Gmail account so they can all have a log on to our laptop and somewhere to save their creations etc.

What sort of email name have you gone for for your child and how old were they when you set them up?

I set my children up with Gmail emails when they were toddlers. These were my email addresses though, I never considered them as belonging to the child until 13 ish years old. Used it though the years to dihn them up for roblox, Minecraft, xbox etc etc. Also means their own YouTube sign in, so i can track what they watch. All emails auto forward to my email address.

Email address for all my children in forename.surname.yearofbirth - useful format for when older.

I set one up for DS the day after he was born (and we had decided on his name). He's only 3.5 so has no reason to need it yet but, as with PP, it's connected to my email address. Eventually, he can have it

Useful for identity thieves. You should never put in year of birth on an email address!

DC have had their own email addresses set up as babies. Similar to pp used for log ins for minecraft etc. Eldest DC is now ten and emails a couple of friends that moved away. We obviously know his password and can check he’s not emailing anyone else.

We never set any up. They did it on their own when they were around 8? To us it’s the kind of thing where they’re old enough when they can do it for themselves.

Google have child accounts for children under 13, which you manage with the family link app. Youngest was around 5 when I set them up for our 3 DS. Names are full name plus favourite numbers.

Meredusoleil · 02/04/2023 21:35

From age 13 when they don't need the Family Link app any more!

Never put your date of birth! We set them up before birth - 3 of them as we couldn’t decide on a name. I love having my proper name as my email address without having to use numbers. They can either keep it or get a new one later.

I made my two gmail addresses when they were infants. Two each, one with their actual names for sensible applying for jobs type emails and one more relaxed version.

Please don’t use full name or any part of birth date.
There are plenty of people who target minors for all sorts of reasons.

Birthdate I understand, more for the data issues. Why can’t you use your name? I love having my full name as an email address. I have it for work too - no random letters or numbers.

Of course it’s your choice, but it does pose a risk in cases of stalking, harassment, and abuse.
Hopefully something anyone you create an email address for won’t have to deal with.

Birth year is a bad idea. Child may want to say game online and EllieTyler2015 may be targeted by paedophiles as the name shows that she's an 8 year old.

I set up [email protected] for future serious things and made a fun one which is 2 things that they are into. So one child has something like ZombieSpinner because they liked Zombies and Fidget Spinners so makes for a neutral enough username on gaming sites where people see that name.

Hello! My 13-year old just established his own gmail account without prior consultation, which I have no access to. I have no idea who he communicates with, and what the content of messages is. He is pushing boundaries otherwise and receives porn from his friends over text messages, insta and WhatsApp. Is there a way I could block his email account (though he would immediately open another one) or have the chance to check what he receives? 🤔

LookOutBandits · 17/05/2023 11:58

I don't see how as he can instantly make a new one.

It's probably a good idea to start your own thread in the teenagers topic.
