Two viruses at once?

DS has had a cough/cold for a couple of days. Tonight as it seemed to peak (up all night coughing non stop) he started with diarrhea/tummy ache.

We had a message from school this week to say a sickness bug was going round.

So what do you think readers, shall I brace myself for a few hellish days?

(Emetophobe here who's already sleep deprived and has such a stressful and busy week ahead at work she can't afford to have two sick kids or be sick herself)

I could cry!

Realised my question wasn't clear - can kids have 2 viruses at once and we're going to be hit by a sickness bug too or is it likely to be one and the same virus?

Of course they can have two viruses at once. I had mumps and measles, that wasn't fun.

If he's been vomiting or having reflux, that could've been causing the cough. Sounds fairly likely he's getting the two bugs you mentioned, though - sorry. I hope he's got better overnight and you only need one day off. Fingers crossed!

Yes, my toddler as a baby had one that was flu like entero virus and the other that was norovirus- confirmed by doctors when he was in the hospital at 5m.

I think we have just had those two together. Pfff. Luckily the vomiting only lasted half a day

It is but that sounds like how COVID presents in children.

GreatWeekAhead · 02/04/2023 12:45

After one dodgy bowel movement in the night we've not had anything else (still coughing loads though). Didn't want any breakfast initially but has had a few bits and pieces since, so doesn't seem like a sickness bug so far, phew!

sorry @MulberryDerry that doesn't sound fun 😔

@Bananananas hmm yeah that sounds plausible. I wonder if there has really been a sickness bug at school or it's all been covid. DS' friend who was sick at school had been coughing all week too

Not sure (not a doctor) but if I have a heavy cold and cough, I often have an upset stomach too. Don't know why

D&V usually starts with the V

@AceofPentacles yes that's usually been our experience which helped keep the panic at bay.

I might ring the GP in the morning as (TMI warning) he now has really pale (almost white) stools and egg-smelling burps. The smell of egg/sulphur is very strong and fills the room it's really unusual. He's otherwise really happy, you wouldn't really know there's anything wrong
