What are your views on swearing in public?

I’m currently staying at a hotel abroad and we have noticed a good 50% of people are having loud drunken conversations using lots of swear words including the f word.

I enjoy a bit of swearing but I wouldn’t shout the f word at the top of my voice around the pool and in the bars and restaurants.

I don’t want to sound like a victor meldrew type but I have been a bit shocked at how much swearing is going on. Are we moving towards a society where swearing is normal and acceptable or am I just unlucky?

I know I’m going to get a load of swearing replies but I am genuinely interested in people’s thoughts on this because I feel so out of touch with a good percentage of people at my hotel!

It is an all inclusive hotel. We are in Mexico. But it isn’t a cheap party hotel - it’s one of the more expensive 5 star hotels and it actually promotes itself as a very quiet, spa like place. We’ve stayed here three times previously and haven’t encountered anything like this before. That’s why I was wondering if things had changed!

I appreciate your replies!

I think it's completely normal and acceptable when in the company of adults.

Not acceptable in a professional situation or around children.

Well, meh in general about it, it is what it is, it's when it's coupled with drunken loutness that it's annoying I suppose.

No problem with 'fuck' at all. I can understand why some people are offended by swear words with a blasphemous origin, so I try to avoid those in unknown company. But 'fuck' 'shit' 'bollocks' are fine in my view.

Swearing is normal and always has been, only the holier than thou middle class types are offended by it. Snore off. Shouting though, sure - I'd find that annoying swearing or not.
