Funniest or most outrageous disparities between real life and social media posts?

Remember an old thread about this that was fun and interesting, so maybe we could please have another one? What's the biggest, most outrageous differences you've seen between someones social media posts and their actual life?

OP posts:

Filters. All the filters. Someone I know uses so many that when I see her in real life I'm always a bit shocked.

Oopswediditagain2023 · 31/03/2023 20:59

There was a girl I went to uni with who I'd been chatting to on Facebook before we met. When I got to uni I asked where she was only to be told she was stood right behind me and I'd already been chatting to her. She looked COMPLETELY different from her photos on Facebook. Like another person 😂

I also know lots of people who have a really "exciting" life according to social media, including quite a few influencer types, but when you get to know them in real life they actually live quite a lonely life. It's sad really

Lilibobo · 31/03/2023 21:04

I have one.

I used to do sex work. I worked as a dominatrix. I used to post all the time on my dominatrix accounts about my glamorous life, complete with sexy leather clad selfies.

I used to call my real life appearance ‘Clark Kent mode’. Take off the makeup and the corset, put on my glasses, a hoodie and some leggings, and no one - absolutely no one- would have recognised me.

SoupedUpSue · 31/03/2023 22:14

I work in media and often post on my social media accounts about all the glam parties I go to/celebs I see. Except in real life I’m usually not allowed a plus one and rarely know anyone there so I literally stand around like a lemon, snap a phew photos and then go home.

SoupedUpSue · 31/03/2023 22:14

*few! (Don’t know what that was about)

trythisforsize · 31/03/2023 22:18

My mum put a 'living the dream' type photo sat in her garden sipping wine, I know for a fact she slipped in dog$hit and stacked it going to buy that wine

RuthTopp · 31/03/2023 22:21

Yes totally agree about filters , they also post stuff about being honest and true to themselves when obviously not !

LilacRain12 · 31/03/2023 22:23

Definitely the filters

sequincardi · 31/03/2023 22:24

An ex mate who was always humble bragging on her Fb and she posted another #soblessed post just after I had been babysitting for her while she went to get her first prescription anti depressants from the doctor

Echobelly · 31/03/2023 22:32

There's a couple of guys from my old school touting themselves as 'life coach'/'business guru' and among their many titles is 'serial entrepeneur', but from what I've heard from other people, that's as in a string of failed businesses. Including one who apparently got married while owing some of his guests a lot of money he could never pay back.

I appreciate one can learn a lot from failure, but I rather think one ought to have had a successful enterprise before setting oneself up as an adviser on success. I suspect a lot of these self-proclaimed 'coaches' are the same.

letsmakepopcorn · 31/03/2023 22:36

Agree with the filters only if I didn't know what they look like in real life, they would have fooled me.

letsmakepopcorn · 31/03/2023 22:37

Oh and the inspirational quotes from someone, again if I didn't know them in real life 😂

xogossipgirlxo · 31/03/2023 22:43

My SIL posting picture with her husband " my best friend" while in real life they're on verge of divorce.

I'm dying on mum stepping in dog shit and "living the dream" 😂

ThisIsWednesday · 31/03/2023 22:50

People who post "Be Kind" shit. They're often the cattiest bitches out there. Ex-school bullies usually post the most inspirational kindness quotes you'll ever see on a profile.

An old friend of mine has the most chaotic, unorthodox life, house is a mess, kids don’t want to be there, ss we’re involved at one point, she’s never held down a job… she sells herself as a life coach 🤣

MrsBarbaraLangerhans · 31/03/2023 22:55

One of the school mums always posting pictures cooing over how great her kids are and how much she loves them and is proud of them. Oldest (12) talks to her like she is shit on his shoe. Nothing to be proud about in my book.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 31/03/2023 23:24

I like to post unspirational quotes:

Try hard and don't worry if you fail - everyone was expecting that.

Never put off until tomorrow what you can avoid altogether.

I may not be perfect, but at least I'm not you.

etc

I had to roll my eyes at a school friend who’s daughter was bullied. The friend went on and on about what was happening and how hard it was to deal with. I really wanted to point out that she had terrorised many kid’s doing the same stuff.

I'm laughing my head off at this, your poor mum!!

Thursa · 31/03/2023 23:34

I used to belong to an online mums group. Everyone went by their real name and a lot of us were FB friends too.

one day one of the members was ranting on the group about her husband, along the lines of “I’m sick of his shit, if he talks to me today I’m going to punch him in his stupid face”. Same woman, same day, on FB, “Happy anniversary to the best husband and most wonderful father to our perfect children. I’m so lucky to have you in my life”.

It was at that point I realised people lie on FB!

(not exact posts, it’s been a few years, but you get the gist)

Omg, I saw something similar, but on instagram. Picture with husband playing fifa and it was supposed to be funny picture “hehe you know, men and their help with Christmas preparation” while IRL this person kicked her husband out of the house for being useless and just playing on playstation🤣 I stopped believing social media loooong time ago and I think everyone who gets down due to SM content should get reality check, for their own sake. It’s shit covered
in gold!

I used to have someone who would post something along the lines of:

"Lovely family time today. I woke the children so we could get up early together to listen to the dawn chorus which we've always wanted to. Dc1 said that he wished we could do it every day as it was so beautiful.
We then went for a walk. Dc2 loves the country, just like me at that age and I had to drag them back home for lunch at the end. The highlight of her walk was when a bee landed on her dress. She said she felt like a flower.
We then did some wonderful crafts all afternoon-look at the photos to see what a wonderful job they made of it. So sad we only get two weeks before they're back at school. #mummyandme #makingmemories #mummysdarlings #wonderfulfamilytime"

But I'd met them in the shops earlier and asked how they were and she said: "Absolutely dreadful. The children woke at 4am this morning and would not shut up. Eventually I sent them into the garden and dc1 pushed dc2 down the steps, and then I found them both rolling in a patch of mud.
We had to take the dog for a walk which was a disaster. Neither of them wanted to come and a bee landed on dc2 so she went hysterical and then screamed every time any insect came near her. Then the dog ran off so we spent the rest of the morning trying to find the stupid animal with both children in tears. Eventually we came home to find him sitting on the steps.
I was so tired in the afternoon, so I thought we'd get out the Christmas crafts. Dc1 found some superglue in one of the packs and glued Lego pieces to the table and we can't get them off. Dc2 threw paint all over dc1, and then painted the dog when I went to the toilet. I sent them both to their rooms and finished the craft stuff myself.
I've booked them in for holiday club for the rest of the week. Can't wait till they're back in school."

🤣

Filters, the usual couples posting lovey stuff then divorcing soon after, one person I know posts a lot about how hard it is being a single parent but only has her kids 2 nights a week...
