what is it like if you make it with instant custard, instead of properly?

don't want to waste time if it's not going to be nice...but would like to save time, if it would be nice 😁

It would be a waste of time imo

I have seen recipes using instant custard....

shall I do an experiment for the both of us?

The whole point of making bread and butter pudding, is that you pour the milk/ egg mixture onto the arranged slices of bread , and it soaks in. If you used ready made custard it wouldn't soak in, it would just sit on top of the bread. I really don't get why you'd want to use custard anyway - the regular milk/egg recipe is so quick and easy , I can't imagine wanting to change it .

My sister makes a luxury one

She uses pannetone and then frozen berries, it's delicious. Makes the custard though

I love bread and butter pudding but I can’t see how using instant custard would work. I don’t think it would be nice and I don’t think it would be easier or faster.

I like to make a chocolate orange one with marmalade and chocolate chips.

Mosaic123 · 31/03/2023 17:44

I just buy chilled vanilla custard. And use brioche rolls. I put jam on the rolls. Tear them up and pour custard over. It's the easiest dessert ever.

according to the recipes with instant custard, you just make it a bit more dilute...when I say instant custard, I mean powdered rather than ready made

It would have to be diluted because it needs to soak into the bread, otherwise it's just hot bread and custard.

I used up leftover panettone and marmalade and sultanas in a post Christmas bread and butter pud - it was delicious.

It’s not bread and butter pudding though.

Bread and butter pudding made properly is an absolute joy and delight. It needs to be made with egg and cream and huge fat sultanas.

TomatoSandwiches · 31/03/2023 17:58

I imagine it would need to be diluted with whole milk and or cream.
You can use melted vanilla icecream at room temp, tastes amazing.

Ina Garden used melted ice cream as 'vanilla sauce' for serving with pineapple upside down cake and the like.

It'll be like a custard sandwich 🤢

parklimes · 31/03/2023 20:48

Make it properly with egg custard, but add desiccated coconut it's a game changer

Well that's not bread and butter pudding, is it?!

Jellycatspyjamas · 01/04/2023 12:21

The whole point of that the bread and butter cooks with the custard I think it would all be too separate if you used instant custard. It’s no effort to mix milk, egg and cream together, don’t even need to measure.
