Portable hard drive

I'd like to buy a portable hard drive for my DS so he can back up his laptop. He is starting yr7 in September, and will be doing some of his school work on it.
Does anyone know what size I need to buy? They vary from 100GB to 5TB or more. Any recommendations? I can spend up to £40 or so.

He won't need kne, everything is cloud based so will automatically back up.

get a subscription to BackBlaze instead and that will backup all his stuff to the cloud.
