UTI? Help me not rip all my hair out!

I think I have a UTI, I'm waiting for a doctor's appointment. Is there anything I can do in the meantime to help? I just ate a bunch of chocolate and have since seen that sugar can make it worse?! This is my first one!! What do I do??

Drink lots of water. It seems counterintuitive, but you want to dilute your urine and also flush it out. If it's absolute agony, sit in a warm bath and pee in there. I have found sitting on the toilet (no undies) helps. It's like everything down there relaxes a bit if you know you can go if you need to. You have my full sympathy!

I'm at work at the mo and in a tight skirt/tights, so I can't run back and forth or sit on the loo all day. I can go home though, so I think I probably should and just guzzle water and sit on the loo with a book. It's a real bitch! Never realised how uncomfortable!

Paracetomol and keep drinking. When you do get antibiotics, its normally a 3 day course and they work very quickly. I do sympathise with you, very uncomfortable

You could get the over the counter cystitis treatment while you're waiting.

I believe you may also be able to take a sample into a pharmacy for a dip tests and they can prescribe antibiotics if needed but I've not tried.

TheHouseNextDoor · 30/03/2023 14:41

Co-codamol if you have any and lots and lots of water.

PacificState · 30/03/2023 15:10

If it's cystitis, go home and lie down, take as much pressure off your bladder and urethra as you can. And go to a pharmacy on the way! Get the over the counter medicine PLUS some sodium citrate or potassium citrate, sachets or made-up mixture - it alters the pH level of your pee so that it doesn't sting so much, and it's a bloody lifesaver. (Unfortunately it tastes awful, but it's not as awful as cystitis.)

StressedSandwich · 30/03/2023 15:13

The cystitis sachets, a hot water bottle and dmannose (you can get from Holland and barrett)

tatteddear · 30/03/2023 15:22

Drink as much water as you can. Get some of those over the counter cystitis powders to add to your water-I think it's called Cysteme. It tastes disgusting but it works pretty effectively.I would avoid wearing synthetic fabrics or anything tight until it clears up-so no tights/anything but cotton knickers. (That might not be clinical advice just something I found that helped).

Cranberry juice will help relieve symptoms

OooohAhhhh · 30/03/2023 20:30

It truly is awful.
I filled up the bath with water and peed in that, I know it sounds disgusting but it feels much better than using the toilet. Cranberry juice has lots of sugar in.
