I'm shocked

light-hearted

My friend told me earlier that they'd think less of a birthday card that was sent with a second class stamp. To them, a second class stamp implied the sender didn't care enough for the card to get to them on time.

They thought I was odd when I told them they were wrong, and I'm a second class stamp planner.

Are you a first or second class user?

How pathetic, sending second class can also mean sending further in advance. Oh the other hand who the hell sends cards in the post nowadays 😂

Marsyas · 29/03/2023 19:33

I disagree. First class means “shit, I forgot, it’s their birthday tomorrow, better grab a card, bung a first class on it and hope it gets there in time”.
Second class means “I picked this card out in advance, and posted it in good time.”
Who would send first class if they didn’t have to because they left it too late?
As to “Who the hell sends cards in the post nowadays?” - how else would you send them?!

People with family they don’t live near! I send and receive plenty of cards by post.

WeWereInParis · 29/03/2023 19:34

a second class stamp implied the sender didn't care enough for the card to get to them on time.

That's not even logical. If it was sent enough in advance then it will still get there on time. Someone sending a birthday card with a first class stamp the day after someone's birthday is clearly less bothered about it being there on time.

BCBird · 29/03/2023 19:34

They need to get out more🙄

teacakecrumbs · 29/03/2023 19:34

I do first class as I worry it won’t arrive on time otherwise. I don’t notice what other people put on mine

This. First class means they forgot and left it too late.

Lol if ever someone needed to get a life, itd be your friend.

I send 2nd class if iv been organised enough to send a card with about 4 days until it needs to get there.

1st class if im any later (usually the day before)

Normally i just send a text!

PrettyMaybug · 29/03/2023 19:41

Wow, what a pathetic, prissy, high-maintenance, boring, tedious, attention-seeking wassock your 'friend' sounds. I'd be ghosting anyone who is enough of a twat to think less of a person for sending a birthday card with a 2nd class stamp.

I have received a few letters/cards this past 10-12 months where the 2nd class stamp (and 1st class stamp on a couple of occasions,) was not franked. Completely unmarked it was.

I peeled it off the envelope gently, and re-used the fucker. (On 4 or 5 occasions.) 3 of the stamps were put on the envelopes of peoples birthday cards. Had not been franked and no-one could tell they had been used before. The cards got there fine!

Bet your 'friend' would pass out with faux outrage if you told her that... @Inthebathagain 😆

Yes yes YES! I know I am probably stealing by re-using the stamps. I don't give a fuck. 😆

Kfjsjdbd · 29/03/2023 19:44

My MIL is like this. Drives me nuts. It is absolutely ridiculous.

FictionalCharacter · 29/03/2023 19:48

Good grief, there are people who check what class of stamp is on their mail? Has to be a person with some kind of obsession or not enough to do! I’d be grateful for any card with any stamp.

GoodChat · 29/03/2023 19:51

Ha, has he been getting cards that are arriving a few days after her birthday? If so, I kind of see her point Grin

twolilacs · 29/03/2023 19:54

If I ever get one with a 2nd class stamp, I think to myself 'If only I could be that organised!'.

WeDoNotTalktoPennilynLott · 29/03/2023 19:57

Your friend sounds annoying and unlikeable.

Epicstorm · 29/03/2023 20:07

I use first class and still send in plenty of time because I don’t trust the post and they’re rarely delivered next day. I don’t use second class as I do think they are treated as low priority. I wouldn’t have a clue when to post to get second class mail there in time. What really confuses me is why two pieces of Mail posted in the same box, with the same value stamp, posted at the same time don’t arrive together.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 29/03/2023 20:08

Tbh, I never used second class stamp. But at the same time, I don't check what stamp people have used.

Only thing that really matter here is if the card arrived on the day? If they sent it close to the date and because it arrived later than the day, that indicates that person may not really care? I don't know. But it may make someone feel that way. Otherwise, who cares?

Changingplace · 29/03/2023 20:10

I have never, in my entire life been so damn bored that I’ve had the inclination to check whether a card has a first or second class stamp on it, god your friend must have a dull life.

curlymam · 29/03/2023 20:16

I know someone who works for Royal Mail, and he said his office don't separate the letters with second class stamps from first class, they just bung them all in together. I've not bought a first class stamp since.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/03/2023 20:20

Why do people like this never use their powers for good?

This low-level, mean-spritied stuff baffles me. Who has time for it?

justmyluck1234 · 29/03/2023 20:24

I'm a guilty send last minute 1st class stamp and hope it gets there 😂

I can honestly say if I received any cards in the post I have never even looked at the stamp to see what it was .. clearly have to much time on there hands

Greensleevevssnotnose · 29/03/2023 20:27

What would she say to me? I email them from friends of the earth cos ya know climate change. Sustainability etc

doozledog · 29/03/2023 20:37

Who even notices a stamp lol

mast0650 · 29/03/2023 20:39

How utterly bizarre. I probably wouldn't even notice. If anything, if it was 2nd class and still arrived on time then I would be impressed that they were sufficiently organized.

Solongtoshort · 29/03/2023 20:47

I think your friend has too much time on her hands if you are looking at stamps on birthday cards, open the card read it be grateful you are in someone’s thoughts.
