Especially when you add in postage

Yes , I use Vinted now for buying and selling.
I used to be an absolute fan / seller / buyer on EBay but the whole strictness of feedback impacting your account and postage costs high put me off. Sellers always used to charge 3.99 or more for a Royal Mail parcel that was 3.25 so adding on profit to postage , and on Vinted for ages they were doing postage promo with Evri for 99p sometimes free etc. It made buying second hand much cheaper and also love the bundle option on Vinted .

I find I only use eBay for brand new / little cheap consumables now - like sweety bags for kids parties / Christmas stickers / etc.

I don’t buy any clothing at all on there now.

Yes I agree. People are trying to get what they paid for items, but now they are second hand.

Postage has gone up plus sellers seem to forget ebay takes a cut

Fluffodils · 29/03/2023 17:21

Like no £1.50 is not enough it's priced at £2.00 so I can make 20p profit!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 29/03/2023 17:24

Yes I have!
I use Vinted as a buyer now
Sellers on eBay starting price for auction is often £10
I buy brand new with tags/ vgc on Vinted for £3-5 for the same favourite brands

This. Ebay takes about 15% of the price including postage, so if something is a fiver in total, Ebay takes 75 p, postage is £3.25, leaving a whole pound for the seller.

Even if they live next to the Post Office/parcel drop off point and use recycled packaging, it's really not worth the hassle, especially when there's the risk of buyers claiming refunds for spurious reasons.

TwinsAndTiramisu · 29/03/2023 17:30

I think people forget, that an awful lot of sellers are just people, not businesses.

I charge £4.10 postage. eBay takes a fee from that (top of my head, think it's 12.8%) about 52p. So now I get £3.58. The actual postage is something like £2.99 (I use Hermes as at least you can show it's been delivered, so many people lie it hasn't turned up if you just use standard royal mail) so now my profit is 59p. From that, I need this to cover me printing out the postage label, the bag or box I'm shipping in, and driving to the parcel drop off shop.

It grips my shit beyond belief when buyers whine about how "well, royal mail is only £3.30" as if that, with all the risks with it, is what private sellers should charge. Don't buy my little girls dress for £8 then. Buy it new for the £40 it originally cost me, but get "free" postage.

Can you tell I'm getting sick of being a seller too Grin

Oh yes there's also that. I mostly sell low value items but if I have to refund one of those then that's 2.00 refunded say and if I'm only making 20p off each one. It's hardly worth it.

Fluffodils · 29/03/2023 17:33

@TwinsAndTiramisu I always just include postage in the price and mark it as "free postage" that cuts out a lot of the complaints.

Sellers charge a little more for postage than Royal Mail prices because eBay take a cut of this as well with their fees. You also have to factor in the cost of packaging and the time/money spent on taking items to post office. If sellers didn't charge a bit more on postage than RM, then businesses would be losing money on every item sent.

I agree Vinted's way of producing pre paid labels is much easier for all, as they don't take a cut of the price either.

Agree with everything you just said. I don't agree eBay prices have gone up either, think everyone is actually pricing more competitively due to there being less demand in current climate. Buyers are very welcome to go ahead and buy item new for full price for more than 2/3 times the cost on eBay.

Can you tell I'm another disgruntled seller 😆
